But the subjects which especially attracted me demanded a more spacious form and a broader style. I turned to the novel, an artistic form which had in former days been neglected and had thus acquired a bad reputation, but which during the nineteenth century had developed and elevated itself to the ranks occupied by drama and the ancient epic. Pontoppidan, Henrik Pontoppidan, 1917 By courtesy of the Nobel Foundation, Stockholm (b. July 24, 1857, Fredericia, Den.d. Aug. 21, 1943, Ordrup, near Copenhagen), realist writer who shared with Karl Gjellerup the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1917 for "his authentic descriptions of present-day life in Denmark." Pontoppidan's novels and short storiesinformed with a desire for social progress but despairing, later in his life, of its realizationpresent an unusually comprehensive picture of his country and his epoch. The son of a clergyman, Pontoppidan partly revolted against his environment by studying engineering in Copenhagen in 1873. In 1879 he broke off his studies and became for several years a teacher. His first collection of stories, was published in 1881, and thereafter he supported himself by writing, until 1900 partly as a journalist with various Copenhagen papers. Pontoppidan's outputmainly novels and short stories written in a cold, aloof, epic stylestretches over half a century and covers most aspects of Danish life. His first books were about country-town life.

HENRIK PONTOPPIDAN PONTOPPIDAN, HENRIK (1857 ), Danish author, son of a pastor, was born at Fredericia on the 24th of July 1857. He studied physics and mathematics at the university of Copenhagen, and when he was eighteen he travelled on foot through Germany and Switzerland. His novels show an intimate acquaint~ance with peasant life and character, the earlier ones shosipg clear evidence of the influence of Kjelland. An excellent example of his work is, in the trilogy dealing with the history of Emanuel Hansted, a theorizing radical parson who marries a peasant wife. These three stories, Muld ( Soil, 1891), Del Forjaettede Land ( The Promised Land, 1892), and Dommens Dag (1895) are marked by fine discrimination and great narrative power. Among his other works are Fra Jalytterne (1887), Folkelivsskildringer (2 parts, 1888-1890), and Skyer (1890). He, began in 1898 a new series in Lykke Per, the story of a typical Jutlancler.
