Pirandello, Luigi
Pirandello By courtesy of the Italian Institute, London (b. June 28, 1867, Agrigento, Sicily, Italyd. Dec. 10, 1936, Rome), Italian playwright, novelist, and short-story writer, winner of the 1934 Nobel Prize for Literature . With his invention of the "theatre within the theatre" in the play Sei personaggi in cerca d'autore Six Characters in Search of an Author ), he became an important innovator in modern drama. Pirandello was the son of a sulfur merchant who wanted him to enter commerce. Pirandello, however, was not interested in business; he wanted to study. He first went to Palermo, the capital of Sicily, and, in 1887, to the University of Rome. After a quarrel with the professor of classics there, he went in 1888 to the University of Bonn, Ger., where in 1891 he gained his doctorate in philology for a thesis on the dialect of Agrigento. In 1894 his father arranged his marriage to Antonietta Portulano, the daughter of a business associate, a wealthy sulfur merchant. This marriage gave him financial independence, allowing him to live in Rome and to write. He had already published an early volume of verse, Mal giocondo Pasqua di Gea (1891; dedicated to Jenny Schulz-Lander, the love he had left behind in Bonn) and a translation of J.W. von Goethe's

Biography of Luigi Pirandello (1867-1936)
Luigi Pirandello Luigi Pirandello was born in 1867 in Girgenti, now Agrigento, on the island of Sicily. His father was a sulfur dealer and expected his son to take up his trade, but Luigi excelled in his academics and was allowed to pursue a literary schooling. He entered the University of Rome in 1887, later transferring to Bonn University where he completed a doctoral thesis on his native Sicilian dialect. Pirandello initially translated Goethe's Roman elegies as his first creative effort. After meeting up with the Sicilian novelist Capuana, Pirandello focused his attention on naturalistic fiction. The Outcast in 1893 was his first novel and contained the roots of things that would appear in his later writing. He wrote two acknowledged masterpieces during his career, Henry IV and Six Characters in Search of an Audience. Henry IV seems to have been largely influenced by his wife's illness, and contains the themes of madness, illusion and isolation. The protagonist goes mad after falling from a horse in a masquerade and imaging that he really is the character he was pretending to play, Henry IV. His madness is supported by a wealthy relative who provides him with retainers. Twelve years later he wakes out of his delusion, but continues to feign insanity when he realizes that he prefers the stability of his world to the vagaries of the real world. When he is visited by the woman he used to love, her lover, her daughter, and a doctor, he becomes very angry with them for trying to snap him out of his madness. The play ends with the death of her lover, and Henry IV continues with the pretense of madness in order to escape punishment.

Luigi Pirandello
A Biographical Sketch
There seems to be little doubt that one of the most influential modern authors/playwrights of the early twentieth century was Luigi Pirandello. Today, his reputation is still of worldwide renown, even as we face entrance into the twenty-first century. His works are centerpieces of study and production. He became the first Italian author/playwright to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Luigi Pirandello was a playwright, novelist, short story writer, poet and one of the leading dramatists of the twentieth century. He was born in Girgenti [now Agrigento], Sicily, located on the south-central coast of the island on June 28, 1867. His father, owner of a rich sulfur mine, played an important role in the industrial and commercial life of Girgenti and Porto Empedocle. Being born into an economically well-to-do family promised him a comfortable childhood and adolescence, which allowed him privileges not enjoyed by many others. After early private schooling at home, Pirandello attended secondary schools in Girgenti, and later, in Palermo. This was followed by studies at the University of Rome and the University of Bonn in Germany, where he was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy degree. During this period of study, he wrote and published two volumes of poetry. Although his father wished him to follow a business career, he found no desire, pleasure or success in that pursuit. He settled in Rome as a professional writer in 1893.

One of the great figures in 20th-century European theater, Pirandello was awarded the 1934 Nobel Prize in Literature. After an extensive education, he began in the 1890s to write poetry and short stories, many of which reflect his interest in Sicilian folklore. In 1897 he became professor of Italian literature at the Normal College for Women in Rome. Before achieving fame Pirandello had many difficult years. Lack of public recognition, the failure of his father's mining business, and the 14-year-long insanity of his wife may account in part for the pessimism of his work. Pirandello wrote seven novels, among them Il fu Mattia Pascal (1904, tr. The Late Mattia Pascal, 1923) and I vecchi e i giovani (1913, tr. The Young and the Old, 1928), as well as nearly 300 short stories. His fame rests primarily, however, on his intellectual and grotesquely humorous plays. He began writing for the theater during World War I and from that time until his death produced more than 40 dramas. By 1924 his plays were being performed in most of the great cities of the world.
