Max Ferdinand Perutz was born in Vienna on May 19th, 1914. Both his parents, Hugo Perutz and Dely Goldschmidt, came from families of textile manufacturers who had made their fortune in the 19th century by the introduction of mechanical spinning and weaving into the Austrian monarchy. He was sent to school at the Theresianum, a grammar school derived from an officers academy of the days of the empress Maria Theresia, and his parents suggested that he should study law in preparation for entering the family business. However, a good schoolmaster awakened his interest in chemistry, and he had no difficulty in persuading his parents to let him study the subject of his choice.
In 1932, he entered Vienna University, where he, in his own words, "wasted five semesters in an exacting course of inorganic analysis". His curiosity was aroused, however, by organic chemistry, and especially by a course of organic biochemistry, given by F. von Wessely, in which Sir F.G. Hopkins' work at Cambridge was mentioned. It was here that Perutz decided that Cambridge was the place where he wanted to work for his Ph.D. thesis. With financial help from his father he became a research student at the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge under J.D. Bernal in September 1936, and he has stayed at Cambridge ever since.
After Hitler's invasion in Austria and Czechoslovakia, the family business was expropriated, his parents became refugees, and his own funds were soon exhausted. He was saved by being appointed research assistant to

In 1936 he became a research student at the Cavendish Laboratory in a crystallography group directed by J. Bernal , and remained in Cambridge subsequently. In 1953 Perutz showed that the diffracted rays from protein crystals could be phased by comparing the patterns from crystals of the protein with and without heavy atoms attached. In 1959 he determined the molecular structure of the protein hemoglobin , which transports oxygen in the blood, using this method. In 1962 he received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry , with John Kendrew He established the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology Cambridge, England .in 1962 and was chairman until 1979. He remained active in research to the end of his life. His son is a professor in chemistry at The University of York in England.

    James Clerk Maxwell
James Clerk Maxwell was born in Edinburgh in 1831. In 1847 he went to Edinburgh University where he studied under William Hamilton. He came to Cambridge in 1850, first to Peterhouse and then Trinity College. In 1854 he graduated with a degree as second wrangler in mathematics. Having held chairs at Marischal College, Aberdeen and King's College London Maxwell was elected to the Royal Society in 1861 and in 1871 he became the first Cavendish Professor of Physics at Cambridge. Maxwell's most celebrated contributions to physics were his work on the kinetic theory of gases and the theory of electromagnetism. The latter included the famous Maxwell equations which admit solutions which are self-propagating waves travelling at the speed of light. He also made contributions to the areas of optics and colour vision. He died in 1879 aged 48.

He followed an eventful path from Vienna to Cambridge, created the world's leading molecular biology laboratory, and won the Nobel Prize
    Anthony Tucker

    The Guardian

Standing beside one of his beautiful models of vital proteins, with his giant forehead, animated face, Austrian English and musician's hands, Max Perutz, who has died aged 87, may sometimes have seemed rather like an inspired gnome. A few minutes with him was enough to reveal a mind like a razor, an elegant command of language, and a quick-footed resilience that was driven by a sense of fun big enough to carry him through any adversity.
