Jean Perrin H. Roger-Viollet in full JEAN-BAPTISTE PERRIN (b. Sept. 30, 1870, Lille, Franced. April 17, 1942, New York, N.Y., U.S.), French physicist who, in his studies of the Brownian motion of minute particles suspended in liquids, verified Albert Einstein's explanation of this phenomenon and thereby confirmed the atomic nature of matter. For this achievement he was honoured with the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1926. J.J. Thomson Around 1908 Perrin began to study Brownian motion, the erratic movement of particles suspended in a liquid. Einstein's mathematical analysis (1905) of this phenomenon suggested that the particles were being jostled by the randomly moving water molecules around them. Using the newly developed ultramicroscope, Perrin carefully observed the manner of sedimentation of these particles and provided experimental confirmation of Einstein's equations. His observations also enabled him to estimate the size of water molecules and atoms as well as their quantity in a given volume. This was the first time the size of atoms and molecules could be reliably calculated from actual visual observations. Perrin's work helped raise atoms from the status of useful hypothetical objects to observable entities whose reality could no longer be denied.

Perrin, Jean Baptiste Jean Baptiste Perrin was born in Lille, September 30,1870, where he was educated at the Ecole Normal Supérieure, becoming an assistant in physics during 1894-1897, when he began his researches on cathode rays and X-rays. He received the degree of "docteur ès sciences" in 1897 for a thesis on cathode and Rantgen rays and was appointed, in the same year, to a readership in physical chemistry at the Sorbonne, University of Paris. He became Professor here in 1910; a post which he held till 1940, when the Germans invaded his country.
His earliest work was on the nature of cathode rays, and their nature was proved by him to be that of negatively charged particles. He also studied the effect of the action of X-rays on the conductivity of gases. In addition, he worked on fluorescence, the disintegration of radium, and the emission and transmission of sound. The work for which he is best known is the study of colloids and, in particular, the so-called Brownian movement. His results in this field were able to confirm Einstein's theoretical studies in which it was shown that colloidal particles should obey the gas laws, and hence to calculate Avogadro's number N, the number of molecules per grammolecule of a gas. The value thus calculated agreed excellently with other values obtained by entirely different methods in connection with other phenomena, such as that found by him as a result of his study of these dimentation equilibrium in suspensions containing microscopic gamboge 'particles of uniform size. In this way the discontinuity of matter was proved by him beyond doubt: an achievement rewarded with the 1926 Nobel Prize.

French composer (born in Florence). The son of a miller, he was probably entrusted to the care of a local court after the death of his mother, and was taken to France by the Chevalier de Guise in March 1646 to serve as and Italian conversationist in the household of Mlle. de Montpensier. At some point he was tutored in guitar and violin as well as dance; the March 1687 edition of Mercure de France lauds his skill as a violinist, also quoting him as having learned by age 17 everything about music he was ever to know. He studied keyboard with Gigault and Roberday, and cultivated a relationship with Michel Lambert, a highly sought-after singer and air de cour composer who served Lully's patron among other nobles and whose daughter Lully later married. Perhaps partly as a result of Lambert's guidance, Lully quickly gained prestige at court. Mlle. de Montpensier released him from his post in October 1652, after her exile for her participation in the Frondes. He danced several roles in the Ballet de la nuit on February 23, 1653 and succeeded Lazarini as composer of the king's instrumental music a month later. From 1652 he was active at court as a dancer and composer and from 1657 onward was responsible for most of the ballets de cour, with the poet Benserade as chief collaborator. Around this time he also took control of the 16-member "petits violons," who played for the king's meals and traveled in his entourage; contrary to general belief, the group evidently predated Lully's leadership, under which they first performed in

Music Jean-Baptiste Lully Biography
Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632-1687), composer
Biography Jean-Baptiste Lully, the quintessential French composer and inventor of French opera, was born Giovanni Battista Lulli on November 28, 1632, in Florence, Italy. He was the son of a miller, Lorenzo di Maldo Lulli, and his wife, Caterina del Sera, a miller's daughter. In his 20th year, French politics intruded into Lully's protected world. Mlle. de Montpensier, who had been a leader of the revolutionary Fronde, was exiled to her chateau at St. Fargeau after the defeat of the Frondists in 1652. Lully asked to be released from her service and returned to Paris. On February 23, 1653, three months after leaving Mlle. de Montpensier's service, Lully danced several parts in Isaac Benserade's Ballet de la nuit at the court of the young King Louis XIV. Apparently Louis was favorably impressed by the young composer, since a few weeks later Lully replaced the Italian Lazarini as "composer of instrumental music for the king." Lully began in Louis' service as a composer of ballets de cour (court ballets), in which he danced together with the king and members of the royal court. At first, as his title suggests, Lully was responsible only for instrumental music. However, he rapidly expanded his field of influence and began to take responsibility for entire ballets. Some time before 1656, he also took over responsibility for the string ensemble called the Petits violons, which he transformed into a group widely renowned for their discipline and artistic excellence.
