I use Apache. I have Perl scripts that create XML documents. Before XSL and CSS were viable, I used Perl to create SGML files and Panorama and/or Citec MultiDoc to view and link between documents using HyTime links that were created from the Perl scripts. I haven't found any problems with Apache as a Web server and SGML/XML applications. I just wish IE 5.0 behaved as well as traditional SGML browsers. I haven't done an extensive amount of testing with IE 5.0 but what I have done I have found many problems that I am not happy with. If you want to see Apache and Perl working, I have a sample available at http://www.eccnet.com/xmledi. The first is a simple bookorder form that creates an XML document. The original version used an XSL stylesheet (first draft). Now I just attached a CSS stylesheet to it until I get some free time to create a new XSL style sheet for it. There is also an XMLized version of the XML/ EDI Current Thread

First Evidence of a Third Family of Fundamental Particles
Professor Martin Perl, discoverer of tau lepton. Scientific Impact: Evidence of the third family of fundamental particles inspired confidence in the Standard Model, the theory then being developed by physicists to explain matter and the forces of nature. The vertex detector method has been used to measure the lifetime of other fundamental particles and is now used universally to measure particle properties. Social Impact: These studies answer questions about the constituents and history of the universe, extending human understanding of nature and contributing to improvements in science education. In addition, although basic research is by definition a search for new knowledge without regard to its practical implications, such work often contributes to technologies with commercial value; examples include computers, lasers, and cancer treatments. DOE Nobel Laureates The most prestigious scientific awards in the world are the Nobel Prizes for Chemistry, Physics, and Physiology or Medicine. All three of these Nobel Prizes have been presented since 1901, with the Nobel Prizes in Chemistry and Physics awarded annually by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine awarded by the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet. (The Nobel Prize web site is accessible at http://nobelprize.org Going back to the earliest days of the Manhattan Project, the Department of Energy and its predecessor agencies have blended cutting-edge research and innovative problem-solving to keep the United States in the forefront of scientific discovery for decades. As testimony to the high quality and impact of the research DOE underwrites, the Department of Energy has sponsored 40 Nobel Laureates since DOE's inception in 1977 - and a total of 80 Nobel Laureates since 1934 (associated with DOE and its predecessor agencies). (These Nobel Prize-winning scientists were recognized for work conducted while they were employed by DOE or predecessor agencies; for work conducted using DOE laboratory facilities; or because a national laboratory or a DOE program office provided long-standing and significant support for their other research efforts.) The complete roster of 80 DOE Nobel Prize winners, their biographies and photos is available at

Thu, 07 Feb 2002 11:55:19 +0000 Bioperlers, The bibliographic classes, java code and a SOAP server were described by Martin Senger at the Tucson Biohachathon. I started writing Bio::Biblio classes according to Martin's schema while at Hackthon. Next, Martin will write parsers to read Medline XML data in to objects. Learn more about Martin's work on bibliographies at http://industry.ebi.ac.uk/openBQS/ senger@ebi.ac.uk biohackathon@egenetics.com jason@cgt.mc.duke.edu ... biohackathon@egenetics.com The Medline XML parser would be excellent - I imagined that a Bio::Biblio::IO factory would create a Bio::Biblio::IO::medlinexml parser. This would build and populate the appropriate Bibilo objects just as we do in SeqIO and SearchIO. Dr. Kane, a retired vice president and director of Pfizer Inc., was the leader of the research team that discovered Terramycin, an antibiotic effective against more than 100 diseases. In association with fellow scientists, he developed a new fermentation process for organic acids and vitamins. He was also one of the leaders in the development of processes for the mass production of penicillin, streptomycin and other antibiotics during World War II. His generous support of Polytechnic has allowed the creation of two new laboratories in 1999-the Jasper H. Kane Organic Chemistry Laboratory and the Jasper H. Kane Crystallography Laboratory. Research in these laboratories is expected to produce purer pharmaceuticals and improved materials.

Tue Feb 4 23:46:47 CST 2003 Interesting. I'm pretty perl-illiterate; but your style was clear enough for me to figure out what you were up to about half way through. It helped that, while I haven't seen the PayPal example, I saw a Web article (don't recall where) that discussed this obfuscated-image approach to ensure that only humans could read something. From my position of ignorance, it looks like you implemented the idea nicely. For now, it seems like overkill to me. I'm not up on spammer tech. Do they OCR bitmaps now? If so, then no, it's not overkill at all. But if they don't, then an unobfuscated bitmap would be easier to create (though not nearly as clever and fun). The big problem that I see, though, is usability. Are people accepting the PayPal usage? That would be one point in your favor for usability. But I believe users like to click an email link, not type an email

Discoveries of two of nature's sub-atomic particles rewarded 1995
The 1995 press release of the Nobel committee starts with:
Mankind seeks his place in nature. He endeavours to find answers to philosophical and physical questions alike. The home of mankind, the Universe, was created in a Big Bang. "What does this Universe consist of?" - "What are the smallest constituents of the Universe and what are their properties?" - "What can they tell us of the history of the Universe and of its future?" etc. This year's laureates have made lasting contributions to this search: They have discovered two of nature's most remarkable subatomic particles. Martin L. Perl and his colleagues discovered, through a series of experiments between 1974 and 1977, at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) in the USA, that the electron has a relative some 3 500 times heavier, which is called the tau . This discovery was the first sign that a third "family" of fundamental building blocks existed. Some years later a further building block was discovered - one of the family's two quarks, the bottom quark. Not until 18 years later was its other quark, the top quark, discovered. The existence of the third family is very important for physicists' confidence in the present theoretical model for understanding the properties of nature's smallest constituents. This is called the standard model. Without a third family, the model would have been incomplete and unable to admit what is termed the C harge and P

Martin L. Perl, a 1955 Columbia Ph.D. has won the Nobel Prize for Physics. He becomes the 55th Nobel Laureate who has taught or studied at Columbia. He was cited for his 1975 discovery of one of the smallest constituents of the universe, a subatomic particle known as the tau lepton. Perl, 68, was a student of I.I. Rabi, the famed Columbia physicist who won the Nobel in 1944 for measuring the radio-frequency spectra of atomic nuclei. "I learned so much from him," Perl said in a telephone interview from Stanford, where he is a professor, soon after learning of his award last Thursday. "The first thing he taught me was, don't do what other people do. The other crucial thing about him was that he was never very good in math, but he was able to do great research. That gave me the courage, if you will, that I could do similar things. "Finally, he taught me that it was good to be first, but better to be right. We never published anything without checking it carefully." The son of immigrant parents, Perl was born in Brooklyn in 1927. He earned a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, now Polytechnic University, and then worked as an engineer for General Electric from 1948 to 1950. With only one year of undergraduate physics, he was admitted to Columbia's graduate physics program. "It was amazing that Columbia accepted me," Perl said. "That kind of confidence was one of the great things about Columbia."
