Arno Penzias Until his retirement in 1998, Arno Penzias was Vice President and Chief Scientist at Bell Laboratories , the Research and Development unit of Lucent Technologies. In 1978, he shared the Nobel Prize in Physics for his research into one of the weightiest of all scientific questions: the origin of the universe. Dr. Penzias helped isolate the primordial celestial radio signal which lent validity to the theory of the Big Bang . A decade and a half earlier, Penzias was part of the group that developed Telstar and Echo , the United States' first communications satellites. In his role as Chief Scientist at Bell Labs, and throughout his career, Dr. Penzias continually demonstrated selfless devotion to championing the causes of science education, diversity in the workplace, and freedom from political oppression for scientists worldwide. Interviewee: Arno Penzias Interviewer: Carol Lof Date: A significantly edited version of the following transcript is presented in Carol Lof's article "A Scientist Looks at Science", printed in the July 1980 issue of IEEE Communications Magazine Penzias: I was talking about an affirmative action program I run. We're making a lot of progress, but there are some real problems. Lof: With affirmative action? Penzias: Not with affirmative action, with everything. People problems with our company. Basically you have a problem in organization, of typecasting people, somehow, when you have a staff organization. We can go to technical for awhile. Suppose you want somebody and they say, "Get to the affirmative action organization," for awhile. Now, after some period of time, that person is going to be promoted to supervisor in finance or public relations or something else, right? Or whatever. Because we have this business of this terrible number of levels. We cut jobs and define each job in terms of some level. Then as you move along, as you stay in a company, you have to keep getting promoted. We try to get out of that in the technical area here. That's one of the things that we try to do very hard. You don't have to get promoted in order to succeed. You can develop without this hangover from grade school. Lof: Promotion usually means you've got to supervise people.

En 1961 comenzó a trabajar en los laboratorios Bell, en New Jersey. Uno de sus primeros proyectos fue buscar las líneas de emisión de las moléculas de OH. Con el éxito de este primer trabajo emprendió la construcción de una antena más grande. Durante este tiempo, otro radioastrónomo llamado Robert Wilson, llegó de Caltech y comenzó a trabajar en 1963. Ambos iniciaron observaciones radioastronómicas. Debido a la gran precisión de sus sistemas, comenzaron nuevos proyectos uno de los cuales fue la medición de la intensidad de la radicación de nuestra galaxia en altas latitudes, que dio como resultado el descubrimiento de la radiación cósmica de fondo.
