Blood Platelets in Cavaliers: Too Few (Thrombocytopenia) and Too Large (Macrothrombocytopenia) Approximately half of all Cavalier King Charles Spaniels may have a congenital blood disorder called idiopathic asymptomatic thrombocytopenia, an abnormally low number of blood platelets, according to recent studies in Denmark and the United States. Blood platelets (also called thrombocytes) are disk-shaped blood elements which aid in blood clotting. Excessively low numbers are the most common cause of bleeding disorders in dogs. The platelets in the blood of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are a combination of those of normal size for dogs and others that are abnormally oversized. Cavaliers' oversized platelets are called macrothrombocytes. Macrothrombocytosis also is a congenital abnormality in the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. These large platelets function normally, and the typical Cavalier does not appear experience any health problems due to the size of its platelets or its fewer numbers. There are, however, exceptions to this typical situation.

Charles J. Pedersen October 3 October 26 ) was an American organic chemist best known for describing methods of synthesizing cyclic polyethers . He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in Born in Pusan Korea , in , Pedersen came to the United States in to study chemical engineering at the University of Dayton in Ohio . After receiving a bachelor's degree , he went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he received a master's degree in organic chemistry. Although his professors encouraged him to pursue a Ph.D. at MIT, Pedersen decided to start his career instead, partially because he no longer wanted to be supported by his father. In , Pedersen began working at du Pont where he would remain for the next 42 years, retiring at the age of 65. At du Pont, his work resulted in 25 papers and 65 patents. In he published two works that are now considered classics; they describe the methods of synthesizing crown ethers (cyclic polyethers). The donut-shaped molecules were the first in a series of extraordinary compounds that form stable structures with alkali metal ions . In 1987 he shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Donald Cram and Jean-Marie Kehm for his work in this area; Cram and Kehm expanded upon his original discoveries.

Charles Petrie's BMW MC Page
My first motor vehicle was a Honda 160 Dream, way back when I was a grad student. I'd always wanted a BMW but that was just a real "dream". I brought back a Honda 350CB from Japan and rode it all around the US and Canada. Finally, after eight years, a car pulled out in front of me I couldn't ride around and I quit for many years. Got a responsible job, had a family, settled down. I'm over all that now. Now I like boxers/airheads . I rode a BMW R65 in Germany several years ago and then I moved to "the bay area" in '93. I discovered Cal BMW and the roads here, and the very best motorcycle in the world for me: an . It was my only motor vehicle from Jan 1994 to Jan 2001, combining commuting and a hobby. I joined BMW Northern California (NorCal) and they taught me a lot about riding the backroads and motorcycle camping. I now keep a drysack packed with my camping gear and can be off in 15 minutes. And I have never stopped at a Road Closed sign, though I have had to turn back. I also keep a bike in Europe and ride there in the summers. See the Eurotour entries below.

Recognizing workplace veterans
Supporting our nation's cause for freedom and peace worldwide by honoring MUSC employee veterans was the theme for the second Military Recognition Day program held Nov. 10. Department of Public Safety Honor Guard present the colors during the Nov. 10 Military Recognition Day. The event honors the duties and commitment of many uniformed men and women for their service and contributions as active and responsible citizens at work and at home. New to this year's event was a musical presentation performed by The Citadel Chorale and Women's Ensemble. The program also recognized MUSC veterans and their impact in the community by sponsoring a Tri-county high school student essay contest on the theme, “What Veteran's Day Means to Me.” Twenty-nine students, representing three area high schools, submitted 500-word entries. The first place winners, Stratford High School seniors Layla McMichael and Christopher Pearson, were present to read their essays and honored with a gift certificate during the ceremony. Layla McMichael
What Veteran’s Day Means to Me

Throughout the year, holidays are scattered as celebrations of religion, race, or history. People give gifts, receive days off from school or work, or just reflect. But there is one holiday that rarely receives such attention, and is often over looked. Veteran’s Day is a day to remember those men and women that gave their childhoods, time, or their very lives to fight for this country. They are the too frequently forgotten heroes of the American people, and even though there is a holiday in commemoration of their service, few take the time to think of what Veteran’s Day really means.

20th April 1986 - 5th May 1998 This page tells the story in words and pictures of Rufus, a Ruby Cavalier who suffered from MVD. It includes links to sites that have information on MVD (mitral heart disease) and has a comprehensive bibliography on this subject. After a long and often very distressing battle against heart disease, this valiant little Cavalier has finally passed away. Although he was a timid and nervous dog, he endured his illness with great dignity and fortitude, thus earning our undying admiration and respect.
Hello! My name is Rufus and I am a Ruby Cavalier with a heart problem. I was born in Wales in 1985, and came to my home by way of Barkham in Berkshire. Good name for a puppy's place isn't it? My lady found the Ruby quote for me and said it is just right as I am as thick as THREE short planks . But I am not that stupid, and to prove it I have made this web page so you can find some links to other pages with information about Cavalier heart problems. My name means Red - I know that, and my lady sometimes calls me "Little Red Rufe" - but the children that used to play with me - they thought my name was "Rooftops!" So, who's stupid, then?
