Octavio Paz Can't really do analysis but: What I really love about Paz is the breathless dizziness of his writing - the way images seem to break from the poem like sudden birds of feeling from lines tangled like branches, and the way a single line can draw you in, involve you leave you with this terrible longing to hold on to something you never quite had. I picked this particular poem 'cos I think it's a good example, but really, there's so much in Paz that is this brilliant. Aseem Kaul.

Imagen y arquetipo E La tendencia arquetípica del ensayo de Paz es algo poco estudiado, pero cierto. La pretensión última de su interpretación ensayística es el ideal. Entendiéndose <<ideal>> en el sentido de interpretación finita y cerrada, sin posibilidad de fisuras; condición atemporal que abarca el antes y el después de las cosas mismas, en la que, paradójicamente, se presenta la condición de obra "cerrada-abierta" de la habla Eco, pues a pesar de que los ensayos de Paz buscan crear una imagen "cerrada", concluyente de una realidad, debido a la forma en que la estructura, combinando prosismo y lirismo, al final el lector se enfrenta a una imagen idiomática "abierta".
Imagen y discurso La comunicación, como medio de relación humana, precisa de un sistema para ello. En realidad al decir "un sistema" estoy delimitando a un sólo mecanismo aquello que en la práctica se realiza en más de una forma de comunicación, en la que juegan papeles protagónicos los lenguajes y sus maneras de aprenderlos, codificarlos y transmitirlos. Sin embargo, lo esencial de estos lenguajes es la comunicación de algo (ya sea transmitido por signos, vocablos o algún otro tipo de código), con la intención final de relacionarnos.

Paz, who died in 1998, was one of those poets with a large parallel oeuvre in prose. He wrote major texts on the culture and history of his native Mexico, on world politics, on eastern religion and many other topics.
In 'Itinerary', he traces the parabola of his intellectual journey from youthful Trotskyism and involvement in the Spanish Civil War - via surrealism, revolt and liberal socialism a la Orwell - to his later more conservative critique of left-wing radicalism.

Los signos en rotación
Nadie puede dejar de lado a la muerte. Ni los hombres grandes ni los pequeños. No por ello existen grandes muertes o pequeñas, todas nos merman como humanidad y cada una de ellas nos recuerda nuestra condición transitoria. Sin embargo, la muerte de algunos seres nos sorprende, no por el hecho de morir, sino por la vida que llevaron y las cosas que durante ella llevaron a cabo. Son seres con vidas más allá de lo ordinario, de lo cotidiano y, no obstante, humanos y mortales. Durante las siguientes semanas el poeta muerto se transformará en espectro de los diarios y noticieros. Se revivirán entrevistas pasadas, se conminará a conocidos y desconocidos del poeta a opinar sobre su persona, su obra, su vida, sus últimos y primeros días, su muerte. Será, por una efímera temporada, el rey del carnaval periodístico. Quizá hasta terminen de editarse, por fin, sus obras completas. Sin embargo, el poeta no merece ser recordado por su muerte, ni por sus simpatías o antipatías personales con el mundo, sino por su obra. Pero el recuerdo es una acción que requiere, necesariamente, del conocimiento previo. Por ello, en este réquiem presento una parte de su pensamiento, pues lo único que trasciende a los poetas es su obra; y, ésta, para conocerla hay que leerla, analizarla, enojarse por su parquedad o maravillarse por su lucidez, desmenuzarla, morderla, utilizarla para enamorarse o para vengarse, cohabitar con ella, dormir a su lado, encadenarla a nuestra vida para tener armas contra la muerte y el olvido; odiar al poema por su manejo de la lengua, coincidir con el ensayo, apreciar o despreciar las imágenes, rescatar al poeta del desgaste polvoriento de los años y, con ello, rescatarnos a cada uno de nosotros de la soledad. Nachbemerkung Versuch einer Neuübersetzung in Kenntnis der deutschen Version von Fritz Vogelgsang (in Octavio Paz, Gedichte , Suhrkamp Verlag 1977). Eine Art Spiel? ("Wie kann ich anders übersetzen, was schon übersetzt wurde?") Oder doch eher der Versuch, das Gedicht im Deutschen dem von mir empfundenen Gehalt des Spanischen näherzubringen?
Zunächst hatte ich "einander nah" für "frente a frente", überlegte aber tagelang immer wieder, wie man das besser machen könnte. Das "Stirn an Stirn" halte ich für die beste Lösung, weil es dem wörtlichen Sinn des Spanischen am nächsten kommt (
