Paz, Octavio
Encyclopedia Article Multimedia 1 item Paz, Octavio (1914-1998), Mexican poet and essayist, who in 1990 became the first Mexican writer to win the Nobel Prize in literature. Paz’s poetry captures the nuances of human experience both in the passing moment—“in which the whole being is sculptured and destroyed”—and in the continuity of cyclical and mythic time. His essays explore a variety of subjects, including modern poetic discourse, social philosophy, and the dynamics of Mexico’s cultural and political past and present. When he won the Nobel Prize, he was cited by the selection committee for his “impassioned writing with wide horizons, characterized by sensuous intelligence and humanistic integrity.” Born in Mexico City and educated at the National University of Mexico (now National Autonomous University of Mexico), Paz grew up influenced by his father and grandfather, both of whom were involved with revolutionary regimes in Mexico. Paz founded an avant-garde literary journal when he was 17 years old and published his first book of poetry at age 19—

Octavio Paz, a Mexican poet and essayist, won the 1990 Nobel Prize for literature. He was the first Mexican author to receive the prize. Paz's works reflect a range of influences, including Aztec mythology, Marxism, Asian philosophy, surrealism, and symbolism.
Paz's collection, Liberty Under Oath (1960), consists of poems written between 1935 and 1957. The Collected Poems of Octavio Paz, 1957-1987 (1987) includes his well-known "Sunstone." This poem uses contrasting images to symbolize the inevitable loneliness of individuals and their search for union with others.
Paz wrote essays on many subjects, including anthropology, literature, philosophy, and science. The Labyrinth of Solitude (1950) is a collection dealing with the character of the Mexican people. In "The New Mexico" (1970), Paz analyzed civilization, language, and political protest. El Mono Gramatico (1972) combines essay, narration, and poetry to give his views on life and art. His reflections on modern history appear in One Earth, Four or Five Worlds

FRAGMENT OF A TALK ON OCTAVIO PAZ, ANTHROPOLOGY AND THE FUTURE OF POETRY
MEXICAN CULTURAL INSTITUTE OF WASHINGTON D.C.
and THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, OCTOBER, 1999
" . . . now I believe our average poet, if it can survive,  is lucky to be something like a liver fluke progressing through the guts of a sheep."
I take as my text today a passage from Octavio's " Corriente Alterna."
If this is a correct reading, it has deep implications for the future of poetry. I will look at this question in my habitual persona as anthropologist. Be warned, gentle audience, that the social sciences do not often console. I offer a hypothesis in the form of a reduced model of an extremely complex situation: there is no time for more. The reason for a sociological approach? It is nonsense to talk about poetry, as most poets and critics today continue to do, without accounting for the socio-economic context of poetry production and reception.
Second: Those of us who care hear every day of underfed, poverty-stricken, culturally-deprived endangered and oppressed indigenous, "primitive," archaic or traditional peasant peoples, whether in the Americas the Amazon again; among the Maya of Central America; among our own Northern Native Americans or in other continents: in other words genocide and ethnocide. After managing two world wars of unparallelled proportions, our century continues on its merry way with the horrors of Guatemala, Tibet, Kurdistan, Ruanda, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, the Congo, Kosovo, Burma, East Timor. The truth is that, whether of the Left or Right politically, elites need land and will kill to get it.
