In Russia, former veterinarian Ivan Petrovich Pavlov served the dictator Stalin with experiments to discover how man could be controlled to better serve the state. He reasoned that if dogs could be made to slaver on command, so could human beings. Man had now been reduced to the level of a mindless animal-and thus psychiatry was born, as a tool for tyrannical governments.

This article is about the Russian scientist Pavlov. For the Soviet platoon commander Yakov Pavlov see Pavlov's House Ivan Petrovich Pavlov September 14 February 27 ) was a Russian physiologist who first described the phenomenon now known as conditioning in experiments with dogs. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in Pavlov was investigating the gastric function of dogs , by externalising a salivary gland so he could collect, measure, and analyse the saliva produced in response to food under different conditions. He noticed that the dogs tended to salivate before food was actually delivered to their mouths, and set out to investigate this "psychic secretion", as he called it. He correctly decided that this was more interesting than the chemistry of saliva, and changed the focus of his research, carrying out a long series of experiments in which he manipulated the stimuli occurring before the presentation of food. He thereby established the basic laws for the establishment and extinction of what he called "conditional reflexes" - i.e. reflex responses, like salivation, that only occurred conditional upon specific previous experiences of the animal. These experiments were carried out in the 1890s and 1900s, and were known to western scientists through translations of individual accounts, but first became fully available in English in a book published in 1927.

    DR. IVAN PAVLOV
Born in Russia, Pavlov was educated to enter priesthood but elected to be a scientist. After earlier studies in Russia, he went to Germany for graduate work. His numerous contributions are in 4 major fields, cardiac physiology, digestion, central nervous system and psychophysiology. In his investigations of digestive glands he was awarded the Nobel prize in 1904. He developed the famous "Pavlov pouch". Also, he began to study psychology and he applied his physiological studies to this field. His book on reflexes is monumental. He was recognized as a great scientist by Russia even though he disagreed with Communism. He will be remembered as one of the great physiologists of all time. Return to the index
