Ivan Pavlov
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Ivan Pavlov Ivan Petrovich Pavlov September 14 February 27 ) was a Russian physiologist who first described the phenomenon now known as conditioning in experiments with dogs. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in Pavlov was investigating the gastric function of dogs by externalising a salivary gland so he could collect, measure, and analyse the saliva Perhaps unfortunately, Pavlov's phrase "condition al reflex" was mistranslated from the Russian as "condition ed reflex", and other scientists reading his work concluded that since such reflexes were conditioned, they must be produced by a process called conditioning . As Pavlov's work became known in the West, particularly through the writings of John B. Watson , the idea of "conditioning" as an automatic form of learning became a key concept in the developing specialism of comparative psychology , and the general approach to psychology that underlay it, behaviorism Bertrand Russell was an enthusastic advocate of the importance of Pavlov's work for philosophy of mind Unlike many pre-revolutionary scientists, Pavlov was highly regarded by the

http://www.who2.com/ivanpavlov.html
IVAN PAVLOV Physiologist Ivan Petrovich Pavlov studied medicine in Russia and Germany, accepting posts in St. Petersburg as a professor in pharmacology and physiology. In 1889 Pavlov began experiments with dogs that proved their reflexes could be conditioned by external stimuli. Specifically, after they were conditioned by the ringing of a bell at feeding time, they would reflexively salivate upon hearing the bell, whether or not food was present. In 1904 Pavlov won the Nobel Prize for his work on digestive physiology, but he is most widely known today as an early influence on behavioral psychology.

Although trained as a physician Pavlov always worked as an experimental laboratory scientist. He only had contact with patients at the end of his career. Under the influence of the well known clinician Sergei Petrovich Botkin he developed a commitment to nervous, as opposed to humoral explanations for bodily functions. By 1883 he had developed his theory of "nervism" which he defined as a physiological theory which tries to prove that the nervous system controls the greatest possible number of bodily functions.

Ivan Petrovich Pavlov was born to a Russian Orthodox priestly family in Ryazan in September 1849. He began his education locally but later progressed to a seminary and then to the University of St. Petersburg where he completed courses in Physiology and Medicine. Following his graduation from the University and from the Military Academy of Medicine in St. Petersburg he continued further studies in Breslau and Leipzig in Germany.
After the completion of some two years of studies in Germany (1884-1886) he returned to St. Petersburg taking up a junior post in Physiology at the University. In or around 1890 he was appointed to a professorship of Pharmacology in the Institute of Experimental Medicine at St Petersburg. In this role he also functioned as the head of the Physiology department.
Whilst Ivan Pavlov was involved with physiological researches with dogs for several years it was only in or or around 1889 that his famous dog research experiments with reflex conditioning or classical conditioning were begun. These experiments were subsequently continued over thirty years.
