The United Nations: Formally Recognized and Recognized by Association

Article The Norwegian Nobel Committee, in its 101 years of existence has awarded the Nobel Peace Prize not only to United Nations agencies and staff eight times-we look at the eight laureates associated with the United Nations, including the Organization itself, in following pages-it has also honoured a number of individuals and organizations working indirectly with the United Nations or its precursor, the League of Nations.
Before 1914, the Nobel Committee credited, in particular, efforts at legislation and arbitration leading to peace, especially in connection with the Hague Peace Conferences of 1899 and 1907, and it awarded the Prize to a number of representatives of popular peace movements and international legal tradition, such as Frederic Passy of France (1901), one of the principal founders of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, and former Belgian Prime Minister August Beernaert (1909), a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration at The Hague.
In the period between the two world wars, many of the laureates were closely associated with the League of Nations. In 1919, the Peace Prize was awarded to United States President Woodrow Wilson for his crucial role in establishing the League; the following year it went to Leon Bourgeois of France, known as its "spiritual father". Perhaps no one was more closely identified with the League of Nations than one of its architects, Lord Robert Cecil of the United Kingdom, who received the Prize in 1937, and participated in 1946 in the final meetings of the League at Geneva, ending his speech with, "The League is dead; long live the United Nations!" He remained active in supporting international efforts for peace through his honorary life presidency of the United Nations Association.

This earliest prototype was made of metal and called “Morrison’s Flyin’ Saucer.” Too heavy to fly well, it was a commercial dud! A company by the name of Wham-O bought Morrison’s invention in 1955, renamed it the "Frisbee" (after the name on the bottom of similarly shaped pie tins), and made millions. The Nobel Peace Prize
In his will of 1895 Alfred Nobel stipulated that the scientific prizes and the prize for literature should be awarded by Swedish institutions. But the decision regarding the peace prize he left to a committee appointed by the Norwegian parliament, the Storting. The reasons why the Swede Alfred Nobel entrusted this honourable task to the Norwegian national assembly are not quite clear. Norway and Sweden had been united under the same sovereign since 1814, but towards the end of the century Norwegian agitation for the dissolution of that union became increasingly strong. It may well be that this gesture was an attempt to defuse a conflict that threatened to explode. On the other hand there is nothing to indicate that Nobel was particularly involved in this constitutional crisis, living outside Sweden as he did for most of his life. Another explanation might lie in his presumed respect for the work of the Storting in the international field: for instance, its decision of 1880 in favour of international arbitration and its active support of the interparliamentary movement. The fact that the Storting appoints the five members of the Peace Prize Selection Committee does not imply that it is as such responsible for the Committee¹s decisions. The Committee is a completely independent body.

Bastiat belonged to the Liberal school and enunciated its principles on the following liens: "Let men work, trade, learn, form partnerships, act and react upon one another, since according to the decrees of Providence, naught save order, harmony, and progress can spring from their intelligent spontaneity". (Harmonies, p. 12.) Of a sincere and generous nature he was fitted to understand and defend Catholic truth; but the prejudices in the midst of which he lived kept him aloof from the Faith until the very eve of his death. It was in Rome that his eyes were opened to the light of Catholicism, and Prodhon, his enemy, says that in his last hour Bastiat cried out with Polyeucte: "I see, I know, I believe; I am a Christian ". Some time before his death he declared that if God would but grant him a new lease of life he would devote his energy to the development of Christian harmony and political economy, but he did not live to fulfill his vow. Bastiat's complete works were published by Guillaumin (Paris, 1854, 1872). Baunard

THE ECONOMICS OF ROBINSON CRUSOE David Edmundson English 630 Professor Laura Mandell Few works of literature have inspired as much response as Robinson Crusoe. In the approximately 275 years since its publication it has inspired hundreds of critiques and imitations. The image of the lone man on his island has been used as an experimental model for discussions of a variety of ideas, but most especially for those which reflect on social and economic issues. Daniel Defoe himself took a great interest in partisan politics and was a prolific spokesman for the views and interests of the emerging middle class. Many have viewed his novels, and especially Robinson Crusoe as vehicles for exploring and expressing the concerns of that class. In this bibliography I have included works which are concerned with class and economics. It could be argued that colonialism, individualism, morality, politics, and puritanism are also tangential to the aforementioned topics. In this project, however, I have tried to focus narrowly on the topics of class and economics. In the section titled "Robinson Crusoe and Class," only works which deal with both are included. The same holds for "Robinson Crusoe and Economics." In the last section, "Economic Theory," I have included works which were contemporaneous with the publication of Robinson Crusoe , or those which comment on that period. Authors have used the story to prove any variety of economic points. Rather than focus on any one economic school, I have preferred to let the variety of interpretations speak to the significance of the constant element the story of one man in a struggle for survival.

(Parigi, 1822 - Neuilly-su-Seine, 1912)
Frederic Passy

, a collection of essays he had published in the course of his research, and he secured his scholarly reputation with a series of lectures delivered in 1860-1861 at the University of Montpellier and later published in two volumes under the title . An admirer of Richard Cobden, he became an ardent free trader, believing that free trade would draw nations together as partners in a common enterprise, result in disarmament, and lead to the abandonment of war. Passy lectured on economic subjects in virtually every city and university of any consequence in France and continued a stream of publications on economic subjects, some of the more important being Malthus et sa doctrine L'Histoire du travail (1873). Passy's passionate belief in education found expression in (1859) end
Passy carried on his efforts within the government as well. He was elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 1881, again in 1885, and defeated in 1889. In the Chamber he supported legislation favorable to labor, especially an act relating to industrial accidents, opposed the colonial policy of the government, drafted a proposal for disarmament, and presented a resolution calling for arbitration of international disputes.
His parliamentary interest in arbitration was whetted by Randal Cremer
Passy's thought and action had unity. International peace was the goal, arbitration of disputes in international politics and free trade in goods the means, the national units making up the Interparliamentary Union the initiating agents, the people the sovereign constituency.

Passy is an exclusive suburb on the Right Bank of Paris, France and traditional home to many of the city's wealthiest residents. It is best known to Americans for being the home of patriot Benjamin Franklin for the nine years that he lived in France during the American Revolutionary War . At the time, Passy was a separate village. Franklin established a small press in his Passy home, to print pamphlets and other material as part of his job to maintain French support of the revolution. He called it the Passy Press. Among other things, he printed passports, even developing a special typeface known as "le Franklin." He also printed a 1782 treatise titled " A Project for Perpetual Peace ," that laid out a vision for maintaining a permanent peace in Europe . It proposed for a central governing council, with representatives of all the nations of Europe, that would rule over international disputes. When Franklin returned to America, the new ambassador to France
