Lacy Lecture was established in 1987 to honor Paul E. Lacy, MD, PhD, professor emeritus and former Robert L. Kroc Professor of Pathology at Washington University School of Medicine. Dr. Lacy served as the Chairman of the Department of Pathology from 1960 until 1984. He is recognized worldwide as a leader in the study of the physiopathology of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.
Dr. Lacy and his associates have examined the basic cellular mechanisms of glucose-induced secretion of insulin. One of his outstanding contributions has been the use of islet transplants for the treatment of experimental diabetes. Aside from his extensive research accomplishments, Dr. Lacy has been an undisputed leader at Washington University School of Medicine, where he developed a distinguished department with excellence in many areas of biomedical research.
Dr. Lacy's emphasis on research as a component of pathology has had a major influence nationwide. Through his continuous counseling and direction, a large number of experimental pathologists have developed their expertise at Washington University, and many of them have subsequently left to create their own departments.

Counting the Nobel laureates... Does it prove what the Discovery Institute says it does?
by Wesley R. Elsberry In their viewer's guide pretentiously (and erroneously, as I will demonstrate below) titled, "Getting the Facts Straight", the Discovery Institute gives us this discussion: The narrator says that anti-evolution efforts following the Scopes trial "had a chilling effect on the teaching of evolution and the publishers of science textbooks. For decades, Darwin seemed to be locked out of America's public schools. But then evolution received an unexpected boost from a very unlikely source the Soviet Union." When the Soviets launched the first man-made satellite, Sputnik, in 1957, Americans were goaded into action. The narrator continues: "As long-neglected science programs were revived in America's classrooms, evolution was, too. Biblical literalists have been doing their best to discredit Darwin's theory ever since." This takes the distortion of history one giant step further. It is blatantly false that U.S. science education was "neglected" after the Scopes trial because Darwinism was "locked out of America's public schools." During those supposedly benighted decades, American schools produced more Nobel Prize-winners than the rest of the world put together. And in physiology and medicine the fields that should have been most stunted by a neglect of Darwinism the U.S. produced fully twice as many Nobel laureates as all other countries combined. How about the U.S. space program? Was it harmed by the supposed neglect of Darwinism in public schools? Contrary to what Evolution implies, the U.S. space program in 1957 was in good shape. The Soviet Union won the race to launch the first satellite because it had made that one of its highest national priorities. The U.S., on the other hand, had other priorities such as caring for its citizens and rebuilding a war-torn world. When Sputnik prodded Americans to put more emphasis on space exploration, the U.S. quickly surpassed the Soviet Union and landed men on the Moon. The necessary resources and personnel were already in place; the U.S. didn't have to wait for a new generation of rocket scientists trained in evolution.

DEAN, SCHOOL OF MEDICINE
March 11, 2004
ALL ACADEMICS AND STAFF AT UCSD (including UCSD Healthcare) SUBJECT: George Palade, M.D. Building Dedication With the approval of the UC President, UCSD Health Sciences announces the naming of the Cellular and Molecular Medicine West Building as the George Palade Laboratories for Cellular and Molecular Medicine, in tribute to the exceptional career and life of George E. Palade, M.D. This honor recognizes Dr. Palade's numerous contributions to UCSD as a scientist, mentor, teacher, and community builder. For over 50 years Dr. Palade, a Nobel Laureate, has made fundamental contributions to our understanding of the structure and function of cells and has opened new fields that scientists continue to explore. He is best known for his work in establishing the pathway for synthesis and transport of proteins along the secretory pathway. Dr. Palade arrived at UCSD from Yale University in February 1990 to serve as the School of Medicine's first Dean for Scientific Affairs. Because local resources were limited, he sought and obtained outside support to achieve his goals. Under his direction, the Howard Hughes Medical Research Institute and the Ludwig Cancer Institute established bases at UCSD. He also obtained support from the Markey Foundation for Graduate Student Fellowships, and secured an institutional grant devoted to building immunology and human genetics at the university. He shaped the new Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine and organized faculty of the Basic Biomedical Sciences to recruit and to represent fields of basic science for which there was no departmental home. Under Dr. Palade's leadership, the School of Medicine and UCSD experienced a remarkable growth and enrichment in scientific programs and development of one of the strongest research facilities in the nation.
