Palade, George E.,
in full GEORGE EMIL PALADE (b. Nov. 19, 1912, Iasi, Rom.), Romanian-born American cell biologist who developed tissue-preparation methods, advanced centrifuging techniques, and conducted electron microscopy studies that resulted in the discovery of several cellular structures. With Albert Claude and Christian de Duve he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1974. Palade received a degree in medicine from the University of Bucharest in 1940 and remained there as a professor until after World War II. He immigrated to the United States in 1946 and began work at the Rockefeller Institute in New York. Palade performed many studies on the internal organization of such cell structures as mitochondria, chloroplasts, the Golgi apparatus, and others. His most important discovery was that microsomes, bodies formerly thought to be fragments of mitochondria, are actually parts of the endoplasmic reticulum (internal cellular transport system) and have a high ribonucleic acid (RNA) content. They were subsequently named ribosomes. Palade became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1952 and in 1958 a professor of cytology at Rockefeller Institute, which he left in 1972 to direct studies in cell biology at Yale University Medical School.

Palade, George E. I was born in November 1912 in Jassy (Iasi), the old capital of Moldavia, the eastern province of Romania. My education was started in that city and was continued through a baccalaureate (continental style) at the "Al Hasdeu" Lyceum in Buzau. My father, Emil Palade, was professor of philosophy and my mother, Constanta Cantemir-Palade, was a teacher. The family environment explains why I acquired early in life great respect for books, scholars and education.
My father had hoped I was going to study philosophy at the University, like himself, but I preferred to deal with tangibles and specifics, and - influenced by relatives much closer to my age than he was - I entered the School of Medicine of the University of Bucharest (Romania) in 1930.
Early in my student years I developed a strong interest in basic biomedical sciences by listening to, and speaking with, Francisc Rainer and André Boivin, professors of Anatomy and Biochemistry, respectively. As a result, I started working in the Anatomy laboratory while still in medical school. I went, nonetheless, through six years of hospital training, mostly in internal medicine, but I did the work for my doctorate thesis in microscopic anatomy on a rather unusual topic (for an M.D.): the nephron of the cetacean Delphinus delphi. It was an attempt to understand its structure in terms of the functional adaptation of a mammal to marine life.

In recent years the work of our laboratory was concentrated on the vascular endothelium, especially the continuous type of endothelium found in the microvasculature of muscles, myocardium and lungs. It led to the identification of plasmalemmal vesicles or caveolae of this type of endothelium as the transcytotic carriers for macromolecules, especially proteins larger than 20A diameter. It also led to the discovery of macromolecular complexes of lipids and proteins involved in targeting and membrane fusion and fission, present in the cytosol or associated with caveolae in the endothelium. Finally, we have been studying the effect of a number of factors, especially the vascular endothelium growth factor (VEGF), on angiogenesis and modifications of the microvasculature of tumors. Biography George Palade received a M.D. from the School of Medicine of the University of Bucharest, Romania; was a member of the faculty of that school until 1945 when he came to the United States for postdoctoral studies. He joined A. Claude at the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research in 1946 and was appointed assistant professor at Rockefeller in 1948; - progressed from assistant professor to full professor and head of the department until 1973 when he moved to Yale as professor and chair of the Section of Cell Biology. He became a senior investigator and Advisor to the Dean in 1983. In 1990, he moved to UCSD as Professor of Medicine in Residence, and Dean for Scientific Affairs.

March 22, 2004 CMM West Named For Nobel Laureate George Palade By Leslie Franz George Palade M.D “We never truly touch or see these wonderful tiny devices that keep every cell and every being alive – since they are far beyond what our senses can perceive unaided. But for us they are alive in our minds, close to our hearts, very much parts of the real world, just like the galaxies with their neutron stars and their pulsars are at the other end of the spectrum of dimensions of matter for our colleagues, the radioastronomers . “For a scientist, it is a unique experience to live through a period in which his field of endeavour comes to bloom – to be witness to those rare moments when the dawn of understanding finally descends upon what appeared to be confusion only a while ago—to listen to the sound of darkness crumbling.” George E. Palade , Nobel Banquet speech, December 1974 UCSD Vice Chancellor Edward Holmes, George Palade A distinguished group of scientists and guests traveled from around the country to celebrate the naming of the University of California , San Diego 's Cellular and Molecular Medicine West Building as the George Palade Laboratories for Cellular and Molecular Medicine. The UCSD School of Medicine's founding Dean for Scientific Affairs George Palade , M.D., was guest of honor, joined by members of his family at ceremonies which took place on March 16 at the School of Medicine .
