1924. Generally agreed to be one of the most significant forces in the history of the American theater, O'Neill is a three-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize. All God's Chillun Got Wings deals with miscegenation and pointedly flouts the convention of caricaturing blacks in literature. O'Neill's play helped to end the practice. Welded, a three-act play features The Capes. See other titles by this author available from Kessinger Publishing.

Biography Base Home Link To Us Search Biographies: Browse Biographies A B C D ... Z Eugene Gladstone O'Neill Biography Eugene (Gladstone) O'Neill (October 16, 1888 - November 27, 1953) was an American playwright best known for explorations into the darker aspects of the human condition. Frequently, his plays show people on the outer edges of society or begin in a situation of ennui and despair and move dramatically downwards to a grim finish.
While he was born in a New York City hotel, his family and his early life were intimately connected to New London, Connecticut. They had owned property in New London since before his birth, and he would have summered there with them virtually from his first memory until they made it the family home. As an adult, he was employed by the New London Telegraph and wrote his first 7 or 8 plays, two of them full-length while living there. (Connecticut College there maintains a major O'Neill archive, and the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, with its major facilities there and in the adjacent town of Waterford, fosters the development of new plays under the aegis of his name.)
In 1929 he moved to the Loire Valley in France where he lived in the Chateau du Plessis in St. Antoine-du-Rocher, Indre et Loire.

Eugene O'Neill
As the son of the celebrated actor James O'Neill, playwright Eugene O'Neill grew up in the theatre, spending the early years of his childhood traveling across the country from theatre to theatre with his family. Born in New York City on October 16, 1888, Eugene Gladstone O'Neill was profoundly affected by the stress of this traveling theatrical life, as well as his family's alcohol and drug abuse and his parents' marital difficulties and betrayals. The themes that he drew on in his plays grew out of these childhood traumas and the restlessness that followed him into his adulthood. Upon leaving Princeton University in 1906 after less than a year's attendance, O'Neill found himself drifting from job to job, prospecting for gold in Honduras, marrying, becoming a father, divorcing, and signing on to various ships as a seaman. Not until 1913, when a bout with tuberculosis required an extended stay in a sanatorium did O'Neill take stock of his life and creative ambitions. It was during this period that he decided to focus and channel his writing into the theatre. After first drawing on nineteenth-century melodrama, O'Neill turned for inspiration to the early modernist plays of August Strindberg, Henrik Ibsen, and George Bernard Shaw; he began to experiment with the development of characterization rather than plot. Over the next four years, O'Neill wrote twenty-four plays, though none was staged until the summer of 1916 when he became involved with the newly formed theatre group the Provincetown Players.

The Associated Press Eugene O'Neill, American playwright, 1936. oston, Nov. 27Eugene O'Neill, noted American playwright whose prolific talents had brought to him both Nobel and Pulitzer Prizes, died today of bronchial pneumonia. His age was 65. The announcement of the death was made by Dr. Harry L. Kozol of Boston. Mr. O'Neill had been ill for several years with Parkinson's disease, a form of palsy that made writing virtually impossible. The writer had been in and out of various hospitals in eastern Massachusetts in recent years, but had sought to keep the visits unpublicized. Mr. O'Neill died in a Boston apartment where he had been living recently. His third wife, Carlotta Monterey, and Dr. Kozol were at the bedside. He also leaves a daughter, Oona O'Neill, who resides with her husband, Charles Chaplain, the actor, in Lucerne, Switzerland, and London. The funeral will be private.
