Research Interests
One of the world’s preeminent scholars of hydrocarbon chemistry, Professor George Olah received the 1994 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for groundbreaking work on superacids and his observations of carbocations, a fleeting chemical species long theorized to exist but never confirmed. Olah devised a way to keep the transient carbocations around long enough to study their properties. What he found has revolutionized understanding of organic chemistry, leading to new discoveries, new fields of research and countless applications.

Nobel Prize Winning Chemists George A. Olah The Nobel Prize In Chemistry 1994 George A. Olah was born in Budapest, Hungary, on May 22, 1927 the son of Julius Olah and Magda Krasznal. His father was a lawyer. He grew up between the two world wars and received a rather solid general education. Organic chemistry particularly intrigued him and he was fortunate later to become a research assistant to Professor Geza Zemplen, the senior professor of organic chemistry in Hungary, who himself was a student of Emil Fischer in Berlin. Zemplen was a carbohydrate chemist, much interested in glycosides. Early in their association it became clear that his ideas and interest were not always closely matching Olah's. When Olah suggested that fluorine containing carbohydrates may be of interest in coupling reactions, his reaction was not unexpectedly very negative. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1994 "for his contribution to carbocation chemistry". He married Judith Lengyel in 1949. They knew each other from their early youth and are happily married now for more than 45 years. Judy worked initially as a technical secretary at the Technical University. Their older son George John was born in Budapest in 1954. Their younger son Ronald Peter was born in Sarnia in 1959. Dow Chemical, with its home base at Midland, Michigan was establishing at the time. He was offered a position to join this new laboratory. The Sarnia years at Dow were productive. It was during this period in the late 50's that his initial workon stable carbocations was started. Dow was and is a major user of carbocationic chemistry, such as the Friedel-Crafts type manufacture of etylbenzene for styrene production. His work thus also had practical significance and helped to improve some industrial processes.

DTI Energy, Inc. exclusive worldwide licensor of DMFC technology
A proven technology, DMFC has been heralded as the power source of the future. Fuel cells produce electricity from potential chemical energy without combustion, through an electrochemical process that combines oxygen and hydrogen to produce electricity, heat, and water. Unlike other types of fuel cells (like generic Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) fuel cells) which require pure hydrogen as a fuel, Direct Methanol Fuel Cells enable this electrochemical process without the need to reform complex hydrocarbon fuel molecules (including methanol) into pure hydrogen. The DMFC technology licensed by DTI is protected by a patent estate consisting of more than 75 patents and patent applications in the United States, Japan, Europe, China, Australia, Brazil, Canada and Israel. If you are interested in obtaining a license to this patented DMFC technology, please contact us

"I was mainly interested in history, languages, even philosophy," recalls Olah, winner of the 2005 Priestley Medal, the American Chemical Society's highest honor. "And until I started university, I never really thought about science, much less chemistry." Of course, like many world-class chemists, Olahwho, at age 77, still towers over most of his colleagues, despite having shrunk a bit with advancing years to 6 feet 4 incheshas a story to tell about tinkering with a chemistry set as a boy. Long before he was appointed director of the Loker Hydrocarbon Research Institute at the University of Southern California and won the 1994 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, Olah and a boyhood friend experimented with a chemistry set in the basement of the friend's home in Budapest, Hungary. At first, the boys followed the experiments laid out in the manual that came with the chemistry set. But then, "we boldly advanced to more 'interesting' experiments," Olah recalls, "until one day, things got a little noisy and smelly." Olah no longer remembers what caused the small explosion and accompanying fire and stench. But the incident destroyed the chemistry set and put an end to his science experiments for several years.

The study of carbocations–the key intermediates in a wide range of acid-catalyzed organic synthetic reactions–allows chemists to understand how and why reactions occur. This in turn can provide valuable insights into the design and structure of new synthetic chemical pathways. Presenting the latest advances in the chemistry of carbocations. Carbocation Chemistry is a comprehensive, self-contained reference on this vital topic. Edited by George Olah, the 1994 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, and Surya Prakesh, one of the most active researchers in the field, the text features contributions from today’s most influential and renowned carbocation experts.
