FTC: Made In The USA Comments Concerning Joseph E. Murray Office of the Secretary
Federal Trade Commission
Washington, DC 20580 To whom it may concern: "IF IT AIN'T BROKE, DON'T FIX IT." That is how I feel about your proposal to change the rule governing the "Made in the U.S.A." labeling policy. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the 50-year old rule, "ALL OR VIRTUALLY ALL" must be made in the U.S.A. to be able to be labeled as such. Proof that this "ALL OR VIRTUALLY ALL" rule is working, is to take a look at who is Pushing You to make changes. Those people are the manufacturers who are using a combination of FOREIGN and domestic parts and labor in their products. The reason they want the changes is simple. GREED, pure and simple GREED. They want to have their "CAKE AND EAT IT TOO." I belong to an organization called the "BUY AMERICA FOUNDATION." I receive a Newsletter every three months. Here is what it says about your proposal. "In our view, the FTC’s recommendation and its Orwellian doublespeak amounts to nothing less than a fraud on the American public that will eventually result in even more American jobs lost to foreign countries. Made in the U.S.A. is is a simple, easily understood concept. American consumers have a fundamental right to know the truth; it should be the role of the Federal Trade commission to protect, not compromise, that right."

Dr. Murray relates the story of another patient, Richard Herrick, whose kidneys were failing and whose life was saved when his twin brother, Ronald, agreed to donate one of his healthy kidneys and made possible the first successful kidney transplant. Throughout his career, Joseph Murray traveled to other countries to help clinicians deal with patients suffering from craniofacial and other deformities, such as patients in India whose hands had been disfigured by leprosy but who, after surgery, were able to use their hands to work as artisans and thus become self-sufficient. Dr. Murray also introduces us to a highly intelligent boy, Ray McMillan, abandoned by his mother because of a birth deformity and placed in an institution for the mentally retarded. At age 21, Ray’s grandmother rescued him from this senseless incarceration. Dr. Murray, who was able to correct Ray’s facial deformity, encouraged the boy to write what was in his heart. To read what this "retarded" boy had to say, and about the joy he found in life, is to witness the transforming effect of Dr. Murray’s care and skill in restoring not just bodies, but souls.

Celebrating 50 Years of Successful Solid Organ Transplantation
Joseph E. Murray, M.D. An interview with Joseph E. Murray, M.D, the Pioneer of Kidney Transplantation Fifty years ago, Dr. Joseph E. Murray performed the first successful solid organ transplant at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston . On December 23, 1954, Dr. Murray transplanted a kidney from Ronald Herrick into his identical twin, Richard Herrick. In commemoration of this historic achievement, the 85-year-old Nobel Prize winner was interviewed on May 25, 2004 by Martin Woolf , the Communications Manager at the New York Organ Donor Network in New York City . Here is an excerpt of the interview Q: This is the 50th anniversary of the first successful organ transplant, which you performed. How do you feel about this personal achievement? Dr. Murray: John Wooden, the UCLA coach said the secret of stardom is the rest of the team. It was teamwork. We had a wonderful group at the Brigham. It started with Dr. George Thorn, who was the chief of medicine. Dr. Frank Moore came on as chief of surgery. Thorn and Moore were really the leaders of the group. John Merrill was the nephroplogist and Dr. J. Hartwell Harrison was the urologist. Dr. Gus Dammin was the pathologist. The dean of the medical school and the administration were behind us. So the whole hospital was geared for the project. We had good leadership. I was the surgeon.
