Professor Ferid Murad

¡@¡@Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine in 1998, Professor Ferid Murad is currently Professor and Chairman of the Department of Integrative Biology and Pharmacology of the University of Texas - Houston Medical School in the USA. ¡@¡@Professor Murad has made distinguished achievements in both academic medicine and the pharmacological industry. He has led research in major pharmaceutical corporations. His work has focused on cell signaling and signal transduction systems. He discovered the new properties of nitric oxide - a colourless, odourless gas that acts as a messenger to tell blood vessels to relax and widen, lowering blood pressure. ¡@¡@For his discoveries, Professor Murad has shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1998 with two other scholars. Not only have these discoveries led to the development of Viagra for treating impotence, nitric oxide is also found to be involved in heart function, infectious and lung problems and the defence of the body against tumors and thus have the potential to treat the relevant diseases. The research of Professor Murad has opened up new horizons for the research of cell signaling. ¡@¡@In March 2000, Professor Murad visited The Chinese University of Hong Kong and delivered a public lecture on "Cellular Signaling with Nitric Oxide and Cyclic GMP". He is also the Honorary Director of the Epithelial Cell Biology Research Centre of The Chinese University of Hong Kong established in collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Military Medical Sciences, and has contributed tremendously to the development and research of the Centre.

Dr. Ferid Murad Presents Nitric Oxide Lecture
Murad, of the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, will present a lecture titled "Nitric Oxide and Cyclic GMP Signaling." Murad, in collaboration with colleagues, won the Nobel Prize for medicine and physiology last year for landmark work on nitric oxide (NO), a gas that transmits signals in organisms. His research analyzed how this particular gas relaxes smooth muscle cells.
The cardiovascular forum will be in Lecture Hall I of the Joe H. Reynolds Medical Building. A reception following the lecture will be held for Murad at 10 a.m. in the lobby of the building. For more information, contact John Holder at (409) 845-6237.

"It's very, very exciting to do something that's never been done before and to get an answer to a question where only you know the answer for the first time. That's a really wonderful experience. And if you're lucky, that turns out to be important," Ferid Murad said. The answers Murad, Robert Furchgott, and Louis Ignarro found were important enough to earn them the 1998 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their discoveries concerning nitric oxide as a signaling molecule in the cardiovascular system. Toward the end of the last century, Alfred Nobel used nitroglycerin in his invention of dynamite. He was later prescribed nitroglycerin for his heart disease, and, although he refused to take it, millions of other people have used it to relieve chest pain. Until Murad's work, however, no one knew precisely how nitroglycerin worked. His discovery came from his interest in intercellular communication and the role of second messenger molecules.

Turon Murad’s Brother Ferid Wins Nobel Prize in Medicine
Ferid Murad has won the Nobel Prize for Medicine for his work with nitric oxide and its impact on the human body. Ferid Murad, 62, is the older brother of Turon Murad, Anthropology, and one of three Murad brothers, each successful in his own right. Ferid Murad, who holds both a Ph.D. and an M.D., now works at the University of Texas Medical School. He has had a very productive career in both research and teaching. Although it was his intent after graduating from medical school to practice medicine, opportunity kept him in pharmacological research and teaching.. The whole Murad family worked hard in the family restaurant in Indiana. The elder Murads, themselves uneducated, were intent on providing an opportunity for work that their sons would love and that would take them beyond the world of steel mills which surrounded them. "Our father wanted us to love our work. And, indeed, each of the three of us is passionate about what we do: Ferid about his pharmacological research, our other brother about his work in dentistry, and, of course, I love my forensics research and work," said Murhad. Although it is certainly the highest and the best-rewarded, the Nobel Prize is not the only prestigious award Ferid has received. In 1996 Ferid received the Albert Lasker Award, often an indicator of who will be nominated for the Nobel.
