The Medical Establishment Vs. The Truth By Dr. Kary Mullis Dr. Mullis was awarded the 1993 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. This article is excerpted from his forthcoming book, "Dancing Naked in the Mind Field", to be published by Pantheon. When I first heard in 1984 that Luc Montagnier of France's Pasteur Institute and Robert Gallo of America's National Institutes of Health had independently discovered that the retrovirus HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), caused AIDS, I accepted it as just another scientific fact. It was a little out of my field of biochemistry, and these men were specialists in retroviruses. Four years later I was working as a consultant at Specialty Labs in Santa Monica. Specialty was trying to develop a means of using P.C.R. polymerase chain reaction, a D.N.A.-amplification method conceived by Mullis] to detect retroviruses in the thousands of blood donations received per day by the Red Cross. I was writing a report on our progress for the project sponsor, and I began by stating, "HIV is the probable cause of AIDS." I asked a virologist at Specialty where I could find the reference for HIV being the cause of AIDS. "You don't need a reference"; he told me. "Everybody knows it." "I'd like to quote a reference." I felt a little funny about not knowing the source of such an important discovery. Everyone else seemed to.

The National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution and the Deutsches Museum collaborated in June 2000 to conduct video interviews with thirty-three Nobel Laureates. Interviews were conducted in Lindau, Germany, Washington, D.C., and elsewhere in the United States. The video documentation subsequently formed the core of the Nobel Voices Video History Project and the exhibition Nobel Voices: Celebrating 100 Years of the Nobel Prize . The interviewees were asked about their motivations, visions for the future, and opinions on the nature of creativity and innovation. In the interviews, the laureates speak about their passion for their work, their childhood inspirations, the spirit of discovery, and the personal meaning of the Nobel Prize.

San Diego resident Kary Mullis is co-winner of the 1993 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his invention of the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), a process that permits the replication of DNA in a short period of time. DNA fingerprinting, DNA sequencing, and genetic disease diagnosis are among the many results of his discovery. A PhD in Biochemistry from UC Berkeley, he is also known for some unconventional views (among them that AIDS is not caused by HIV) and his love of surfing. What is a polymerase? A polymerase is a naturally occurring enzyme, a biological macromolecule that catalyzes the formation and repair of DNA (and RNA). The accurate replication of all living matter depends on this activity an activity scientists have learned to manipulate. In the 1980s, Kary Mullis at Cetus Corporation conceived of a way to start and stop a polymerase's action at specific points along a single strand of DNA. What is the chain reaction ? Mullis also realized that by harnessing this component of molecular reproduction technology, the target DNA could be exponentially amplified. When other Cetus scientists eventually succeeded in making the polymerase chain reaction perform as desired in a reliable fashion, they had an immensely powerful technique for providing essentially unlimited quantities of the precise genetic material molecular biologists and others required for their work. What is PCR? Though the simplest and most convenient way to define PCR is as a

In the , he invented the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), a central technique in molecular biology which allows the amplification of specified DNA sequences. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for this work in Kary Mullis holds several highly idiosyncratic views. In his 1998 essay collection Dancing Naked in the Mind Field he relates experiences that he attributes to space alien visitors. He also claims that the evidence behind astrology has not been adequately appreciated. Kary Mullis is among a scientific minority that claims that there is not sufficient evidence for stating that HIV causes AIDS (see AIDS reappraisal ). He has also advocated that concentration s be measured in "number of things per milliliter" instead of " mole s per milliliter" because of the arbitrariness of Avogadro's number Avogadro's number N is the number of particles ( atoms, molecules, or ions) in a mole. Avogadro's number is approximately 6. 022 × 1023 particles per mole of any substance. This physical constant is named after the early 19th century Italian scientist Ame

The birth of PCR The Polymerase Chain Reaction was developed from an idea by Kary B. Mullis. Kary B. Mullis. Kary Mullis was born in 1944 in Lenoir, North Carolina. He obtained his Bachelors degree in Chemistry in 1966 from the Georgia Institute of Technology and in 1972 received a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of California at Berkeley. He then spent seven years of post-doctoral research on Paediatric Cardiology and Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of Kansas Medical School. After his period at KMS he was offered a technicians post at the Cetus Corporation of Emeryville in 1978. It was during his time here that he conceived the idea for PCR. In 1983, whilst driving along the highway from San Francisco to his home in La Jolla, California, Mullis was thinking about a simple method of determining a specific nucleotide from along a stretch of DNA. He then, like many great scientists, claimed to have had a sudden flash of inspirational vision. The solution was not to his original problem, but to one of much greater significance. He had conceived a way to start and stop polymerase action and consequently by harnessing this property, a way of exponentially amplifying a DNA sequence in a test tube. Mullis then took his concept to his associates at Cetus and together they took the idea and made it work in an experimental system.
