APRIL / MAY 1997 Archives Features News Notes Charlie Barnes ... In Memoriam Laureates add energy, prestige to FSU faculty By John S. Cole FSU Communications Group Few Southeastern schools can boast of even one Nobel laureate on the faculty. Florida State University has had five. With less than 50 years of graduate science programs under its belt, FSU has already hired more Nobel Prize winners than any other college or university in the Southeast, according to Dr. Steve Edwards, FSU's dean of the faculties. Their presence has done wonders to strengthen and expand not only FSU's science programs but its overall standing in the academic community. "Having Nobel laureates has multiple advantages," said Donald Foss, dean of Arts and Sciences. "They bring a tremendous amount of energy and intelligence to the campus and to the colleagues with whom they work. That helps to energize the university." FSU's first such Nobel-inspired excitement came in the winter of 1966, when chemistry professor Robert S. Mulliken won the prize in chemistry. Mulliken, whose work focused on how molecules interact with one another, was originally a physics professor at the University of Chicago, where he actually did the research that earned him his prize.

  • Background note Administrative information Background note Slater served as chair of the Department of Physics until 1952, when he was appointed MIT's first Institute Professor and Harry B. Higgins chair, allowing him even greater latitude in pressing his interdisciplinary agenda. After a year spent at Brookhaven Laboratories, he returned to MIT to help establish the renowned group in solid state and molecular theory and the interdisciplinary Center for Materials Science and Engineering, the Research Laboratory of Electronics, and the Laboratory for Nuclear Science. The new perspectives on materials science emanating from these groups was instrumental in the development of the transistor, in part through the doctoral work of one of Slater's best known students, William Shockley. After Slater retired from MIT in 1966, he was hired by the University of Florida as Graduate Research Professor of Physics and Chemistry, remaining active at both institutions until his death in 1976. Slater's voluminous publications include several key works in shaping the several fields in which worked, including

Historical Note
The College of Arts and Sciences, originally called the College of Liberal Arts, began in 1828 with the chartering of Indiana College. Until the Law School was established in 1889, the college of the Liberal Arts was the only permanent division of the University. The statutes governing the University which date from this period deal chiefly with what is now the College of Arts and Sciences. At first Greek and Latin were the only studies, gradually the natural and abstract sciences, history, and literature courses were added. The departmental organization of the College was formed in 1887 and consisted of 15 departments. During the period covered by this collection the College of Arts and Sciences had more than 40 degree-granting departments in addition to Optometry and Social Service schools which operated under its auspices. The name was changed from College of Liberal Arts to College of Arts and Sciences in 1921. Selatie Edgar Stout and David Andrew Rothrock had been appointed as Deans (Stout with seniority) in 1920 and shared the office until 1937 when Rothrock was made Director of Admissions. Stout continued as Dean until his retirement at the end of the third semester 1942. He was followed by Fernandus Payne (1942-1947), John William Ashton (1947-1950), Frank Thomson Gucker (1951-1965), Joseph Lee Sutton (1965-1966), Byrum E. Carter (1966-1970), George W. Ryerson Physical Laboratory: A Brief History
This review appeared in the Winter/Spring 1973 issue of the University of Chicago Division of the Physical Sciences Reports. The Ryerson Physical Laboratory served the Department of Physics from 1894 until 1985; now the renovated building is the home of the Department of Computer Science. The crennelated battlements surround a miniature observatory, enormous oak beams overlook physics laboratories, a spiral staircase corkscrews up the front tower, and iron filigree trims the central staircase. In the attics rest mementos beyond description. This somewhat unlikely collection of neogothic grandeur is the Ryerson Physical Laboratory on the University campus. Site of early (and historical) work in the physical sciences, the building has sheltered several Nobel Prize winners, the Manhattan Project , and houses the continuing business of educating students at the University.

David Henige
David Henige, a librarian and historian, explores the principles and practices of accurate quoting. Using the examples of quotations attributed to Charles H. Duell, Joseph Lister, J.E. Erichsen, and Albert Michelson, Henige discusses the ways in which inaccurate quotations and the repeated use of common editorial modifications, including ellipses and bracketed alterations, have altered the original material over time. The author urges researchers to take care to seek the original source of citations in an effort to ensure the accuracy of their own quotations. Thus at your request, I have shown in many Instances, how partial you have been in your Citations, taking some fragments, or parcels of Sentences, or sometimes a short Sentence you thought might serve your turn, and always leaving what you could not but know would have destroyed your Notion or Argument.

This was truly grist for my mill, particularly as it echoed a very similar statement by the historian Lord Acton at about the same time. I set about determining how many patents had been issued since 1900 to expose the sheer magnitude of the miscalculation. I borrowed microfiche copies of the annual reports of the Patent Office for the period, presuming that the statement must have been made in one of these.
