Joshua Jortner
Biography
Joshua Jortner's scientific interests span a broad range of areas in chemical physics and theoretical chemistry. Jortner's scientific research interests focus on the exploration of the phenomena of energy acquisition, storage and disposal in isolated molecules, clusters, condensed phases and biophysical systems. His scientific work contributed to the dynamics of complex chemical systems from large molecules to biomolecules, through the development of the theory of intramolecular radiationless transitions, electron transfer theory including charge separation in photosynthesis and in biopolymers, cluster size effects and dynamics of large finite systems and dynamics-function relations for biophysical and chemical change. His work had an impact on the development of chemical dynamics, photoselective laser chemistry, ultrafast chemistry, molecular electronics and nanoscience. Jortner is the author or co-author of 670 scientific articles and the co-author and co-editor of 23 books.
Joshua Jortner acted as advisor and mentor to countless colleagues, both junior and senior, in Tel Aviv University, in Israel and around the world. He served as a research supervisor to more than fifty graduate students at Tel Aviv University, and the post doctorate fellows who worked with him shape modern chemical sciences in Israel, Europe and the U.S. His scientific collaboration in Israel and all around the world is extensive and intensive. Jortner has been a major contributor to building and maintaining the strength of chemical physics, the chemical sciences and science and scholarship at Tel Aviv University and in the country.

Index to the Scientists and Engineers Biographical File
About the Scientists and Engineers Biographical File What is the Scientists and Engineers Biographical File? It is a collection of hard copy files with information on scientists who were prominent in the early 1970s. It consists of folders containing photographs, biographical information and bibliographies of 1200 American and 100 foreign scientists and engineers. How was the collection formed? The collection was formed during the years 1972 - 75. The Science and Technology Division contacted well known and lesser known scientists and engineers of the mid-twentieth century, and asked them to donate the materials. Those asked included:
  • Members of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineers Scientists listed in Who's Who in Science and Engineers of Distinction Nobel Prize recipients and winners of the National Medal for Science Members of Scientists in Search of Their Consciences.
Who should use the The Scientists and Engineers Biographical File?

77. Ruedenberg Honored
There he became a postdoctoral fellow with robert S. mulliken, who two decadeslater received the Nobel Prize in theoretical chemistry.
http://www.external.ameslab.gov/news/insider10-01RuedenbergACS.htm
From INSIDER, newsletter for employees of Ames Laboratory, Vol. 12, No. 9, October 2001 A Giant Among Us
Klaus Ruedenberg honored by American Chemical Society by Saren Johnston Klaus Ruedenberg, an Ames Laboratory senior associate and an Iowa State University Distinguished Professor Emeritus, has been chosen to receive the prestigious American Chemical Society Award in Theoretical Chemistry. Nominees for this honor must have accomplished "innovative research in the field of theoretical chemistry characterized by depth, originality and scientific significance." His award states that he has seminally ad-vanced many different, important facets of quantum chemistry, en-compassing fundamental theory, formal mathematical developments, computational methods and software implementations, as well as conceptual interpretations. Modest about his accomplishments, Ruedenberg said, "What we end up doing is somewhat accidental. We choose among the professional options available to us, those that fascinate us and pose problems we feel we will be able to help solve." Ruedenberg grew up in Bielefeld, Germany, and earned an M.S. in chemistry at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland. Finding mathematics and theory more attractive than experiments, he switched to theoretical physics at the Univer-sity of Zürich where, in 1950, he obtained a Ph.D. in meson field theory with the renowned Gregor Wentzel, whom he followed to the University of Chicago.

The Assignment of Quantum Numbers for Electrons in Molecules. II. Correlation of Molecular and Atomic Electron States
Robert S. Mulliken
Washington Square College, New York University
Received July 1928 A few revisions, suggested by recent results of Herzberg on N , are made in Table III of I, for N , CN, and O . These revisions involve dissociation of unexcited molecules to give one excited atom or ion. With these revisions, and a revised heat of dissociation for N , the quantum number assignments previously made are found to be all consistent with Hund's rule of sigma l and s sums, and, except for one or two states of F , with the sigma l tau conservation rule given in I. This result gives needed support to the latter rule. The probable atomic dissociation products are determined for most of the molecular states given in Table III of I. In the cases of N

On a Class of One-Valence-Electron Emitters of Band Spectra
Robert S. Mulliken
Jefferson Physical Laboratory, Harvard University
Received 3 July 1925 Bands emitted by one-valence-electron molecules Series A BeF BO CO CN N . These molecules each contain, like the Na atom, 8+1 electrons outside the nuclei and K electrons. The bands of CO (the comet-tail, negative Deslandres and new quadruple-headed bands reported by Baldet and Johnson) are particularly discussed and analogies to the bands of BO and of CN are pointed out, as well as analogies between the bands of N and of CN. The data for BeF bands are less complete. The lines of the known band systems of all these molecules can in each case be expressed as combinations of three electronic terms (each of course with a variety of vibrational and rotational states). These are a singlet term N probably belonging to the normal state, a doublet term
