Mulliken, Robert Sanderson US chemist, who was awarded the 1966 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for his work on molecules.
The son of an organic chemist, Mulliken was educated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Chicago, where he was awarded his PhD in 1921. Apart from a brief period in New York, Mulliken spent the whole of his academic career at Chicago, serving from 1931 until his retirement in 1961 as professor of physics. Mulliken's work in chemistry was concerned with the development of molecular orbital theory. According to his theory, electrons move in orbitals, which encircle several atomic nuclei. The shapes of these orbitals can be calculated, enabling conclusions to be drawn about the energy of bonds, etc. Mulliken also made major contributions to the interpretation of molecular spectra.

¿Cómo es que, siendo tan inteligentes los niños, son tan estúpidos la mayor parte de los hombres? Debe de ser el fruto de la educación.

Background
The earliest known chapter of the American Association of Scientific Workers (AAScW) was begun in Philadelphia in late 1937 by research chemist K.A.C. Elliot and seven other young scientists. By the end of 1938 a much larger Philadelphia chapter had merged with a similar group in the Boston-Cambridge area to form the national association, based loosely on Britain’s Association of Scientific Workers. By 1939 there were significant chapters is New York and Chicago as well. The goal of the organization’s founders was to establish a progressive national association that would involve scientists directly in political and social issues for the first time. Seeking to fill a void left by the less-politicized science organizations of the day, the AAScW sought to promote science for the benefit of society, to stress science education for the public (thereby discrediting “pseudo-science”), and to take a moral stand against the misapplication of science by industry and government. The background to this new interest in “social responsibility” ran back to the First World War, when technology helped bring killing and destruction to shocking new levels.
