Zdzis³aw Szymañski (1926-1999) Zdzis³aw Szymañski, an outstanding nuclear physicists, died suddenly of a heart attack on Sunday, September 5, 1999, in Krzy¿e while attending the Masurian Summer School of Physics. In 1956-1978 and 1981-1996, he was employed in our Institute. Lately, he was professor emeritus at the Physics Department of Warsaw University. Zdzis³aw Szymañski was born in 1926 in Czarne near W³oc³awek. In 1950 he received his master degree in engineering at the £ódŸ Technical University, and in 1953 his master degree in physics at the Warsaw University. For a short time he was employed in the Physics Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences, where he got his PhD degree in physics. In his thesis, he considered some flow problems in rarefied gases, and at the time he was a bit unhappy with the remoteness of his thesis from contemporary physics. He did not realize that after a few decades certain properties of rarefied gases would find application in explaining the dissipation effects in atomic nuclei. In 1956 Zdzis³aw Szymañski started working in the Department of the Nuclear Theory of the newly established Institute of Nuclear Research. Simultaneously he was employed in the Institute of Theoretical Physics of Warsaw University, where in 1961 he got his doctor of science degree (habilitation).

photo: R. Kaczarowski My early contacts with Zdzislaw I would like to recall Zdzislaw and my early contacts with him in sixties, when these contacts were especially close. A very important period for Zdzislaw was the academic year 1959/60 which he spent in Copenhagen. Very intensive studies on nuclear structure, collective model, effects of pairing interactions and connected problems, were being performed then in Copenhagen by Aage Bohr, Ben Mottelson and others, and this work was attracting many nuclear physicists from all over the world. Zdzislaw also joined this work. He studied, together with Daniel Bes, the effect of pairing interactions on nuclear deformation. This was a generalization of the studies by Ben Mottelson and Sven Gosta Nilsson done in the case of no pairing. The results of Bes and Szymanski, obtained for even-even nuclei in the rare-earth region, showed a good agreement with experiment, especially for well deformed nuclei around the centre of the region. This study, Zdzislaw, himself, has extended to actinides. Both papers have been published in Nuclear Physics 28 (1961). The research done by Zdzislaw in Copenhagen has determined the topic and a general "philosophy" of his further studies. These were theoretical studies of nuclear structure leading to results which could be, at once or in a near future, directly compared with experiment. Thus, these were theoretical studies done in a close interaction with experimentalists.

Gillies and Cailliau
The World Wide Web was conceived at CERN to allow particle physicists easy access to information, wherever it was and they happened to be. It was a great success, so great that it went on to take the whole world by storm - a veritable communications revolution.
CERN Courier News Editor James Gillies teamed up with CERN World Wide Web pioneer Robert Cailliau to write a detailed history of modern telecommunications, particularly as seen through CERN eyes. As the book points out, the fact that the Web was invented at CERN "is no accident".
How the Web was Born by James Gillies and Robert Cailliau, Oxford University Press, ISBN 0192862073, pbk.
This book is a surprising, ambitious, interesting and courageous account of a series of developments culminating in the invention at CERN of the World Wide Web. It is not only a history of the Web - it covers in considerable detail the necessary evolution of networks, personal computers and software technology which enabled Tim Berners-Lee's brilliant creation of the Web in 1989.
I say "surprising" because it had seemed to me that enough good Internet histories had already been written (Salus 1995; Hafner and Lyon 1996; Randall 1997). Furthermore, Berners-Lee's own account

Benjamin Roy Mottelson
Fysiker (f. 1926)
