under the auspices of
Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare
The ninth session of the series " Selected Topics in Nuclear and Atomic Physics " will take place from October 1st to October 5th, 2003. Just as in 1999 we have moved the site of the meeting from Varenna, its traditional site, to Fiera di Primiero , a small town in the Italian Dolomites. Thanks to the hospitality of the local authorities the meeting will be held at the Palazzo delle Miniere , an ancient medieval palace dating from the XV century.
Along the tradition of the previous meetings, the skeleton of the program will be formed by a series of lectures on different subjects of general interest. The topics for this year and the corresponding lecturers are:
  • Elementary features of nuclear structure, Ben Mottelson, Nordita Nuclear structure at drip lines, Ikuko Hamamoto, Lund Recent developments in nuclear structure physics at low spins

Thomas Hunt Morgan won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1933 for his chromosome theory of heredity. On the basis of experimental research with the fruit fly (Drosophila), he demonstrated that genes are linked in a series on chromosomes and that they determine identifiable, hereditary traits.
An embryologist by training, Morgan turned his attention to Drosophila in 1908. On the basis of fly-breeding experiments, he developed a hypothesis of sex-linked characteristics, which he theorized were part of the X chromosome of females. In 1928, he came to Caltech to organize work in biology. The most influential biologist in America at that time, Morgan pioneered the new science of genetics, the essential science for the future of biology. In 1930, he also established a marine biology laboratory at Corona del Mar (the lab is still in use today). By then, Morgan had left Drosophila genetics and had returned to his earlier interest in developmental biology. He often spent weekends at the marine station working with an organism called the sea squirt. He remained on the Caltech faculty for the rest of his career.
Anderson arrived at Caltech in 1923 as an 18-year-old freshman, and never left. He discovered the positron in 1932, using a cloud chamber. Shortly thereafter, Anderson and his graduate student, Seth Neddermeyer, discovered mu-mesons, or muons. During World War II, Caltech scientists produced and tested land and aircraft rockets for the United States Navy. Anderson supervised the testing of aircraft rockets at China Lake and later visited the front lines in Europe to observe how the rockets performed. He served as chair of the Division of Physics, Mathematics and Astronomy from 1962 to 1970, and was named emeritus in 1976.

Contact Sample Publications Invited Talks ... UofT Physics A first advance came with the discovery that the major existing many-body theories of equilibrium states and elementary excitations could be expressed succinctly in a so-called equations-of-motion formalism. This theory embraced the Hartree-Fock mean field theory, the BCS quasi-particle approximation and the Random-Phase Approximation within a simple common framework that could be extended and applied more generally. Thus, it provided succinct expressions of the standard many-body theories and the means to go beyond them. It is now recognized as the simplest of a more general algebraic theory that is currently being developed. A second successful approach, known as a theory of large-amplitude collective motion , was initiated with a graduate student Rick Basserman and subsequently pursued by many others. The theory was based on the observation that a submanifold of coherent states of a many-particle Hilbert space not only spans the Hilbert space but also has the properties of a classical phase space. Thus, the coherent states provide a link between classical and quantum mechanics
A breakthrough in the formulation of a microscopic theory of nuclear collective dynamics The preceeding paragraph shows that the first essential step towards giving a phenomenological model a microscopic foundation is to express the model in algebraic terms. This first step already enables the powerful tools of Lie group and Lie algebra theory to be utilized in the quantization of the model by construction of the unitary irreducible representations of its spectrum generating algebra. Moreover, it is widely applicable because, as I have shown, almost all nuclear models can be expressed as

Although the NBA has existed since shortly after Bohr's death in 1962, its future was only secured at the centennial of Bohr's birth in 1985, when a deed of gift from Bohr's wife, Margrethe, provided the opportunity to establish the NBA as an independent non-profit institution. Since 1985, the NBA has had its own board of directors and has received a fixed annual sum for running expenses from the Danish Ministry of Education (as of spring 1998, the Ministry of Research); it has also made ample use of its privilege to apply for project support from private sources. The core of the collections comprises Bohr's scientific correspondence (6000 letters and drafts) and manuscripts (500 units). This material was catalogued and microfilmed in the early 1960s as part of the Archive for History of Quantum Physics (AHQP), a project sponsored by the American Philosophical Society and the American Physical Society. The outcome was 290 microfilms of various relevant historical material have been placed in several repositories world-wide, including the NBA.

The Niels Bohr Archive's History of Science Seminar held at the Niels Bohr Institute 19 November 1999: "Copenhagen" and Beyond: The Interconnections between Drama, Science, and History Lectures and discussion A. Lectures. Finn Aaserud Ben Mottelson . It's a great pleasure for me on behalf of the Niels Bohr Institute and the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics to welcome you to our Institute. I would like to say that the play "Copenhagen" has been experienced as wonderful and inspiring and thought-provoking in our circle. It's indeed a fascinating work of art that you [Michael Frayn] have made out of this historical event, that is so closely tied to the institute in which we work every day. That's a work of art, but some people might say that it's going too far that poets and actors should be giving lectures in these buildings that are committed to the study of physics. But that would be a big mistake, because, already from the beginning, Niels Bohr was firmly committed to the vision of this Institute as a meeting place where scientists from all over the world could come to discuss ideas – all kinds of ideas – even crazy ideas! And so this meeting today fits brilliantly into our tradition. (laughter) Aaserud . Thank you very much, Ben. I should say something about the format first. There will be three brief lectures to follow. They're all in the program. We will first have the man who made the current bringing-together of fields possible in the first place. Michael Frayn is long established in British journalism, literature, and drama. He is also the main translator into English of Chekhov's plays from Russian, which shows something of his breadth. He is presently in the news with the publication of his latest novel called "Headlong," which has also to do with his visit to Copenhagen because that book has just been translated into Danish, and he will present that book at the Book Fair tomorrow. But that is tomorrow; today there is a different matter. So without any further ado, I will give the floor to Michael Frayn. (applause)
