The Nobel Peace Prize
October is the month when the names of the Nobel prize winners are made known to the world. The winners are the people who have proved worthy to be honoured that year for their significant contributions in the fields of physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and work for peace. In addition, a Nobel memorial prize was established in 1968 The Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel. Since 1969, this prize has been awarded at the same time as the five Nobel Prizes. Many other similar prizes are of course given by other institutions all over the world, but the Nobel prizes have maintained a unique position since the first one was awarded in 1901. There are many reasons for this, but probably one of the most important is the general trust in the thoroughness of the investigations and deliberations undertaken by highly qualified persons before each award is made. In his will of 1895 Alfred Nobel stipulated that the scientific prizes and the prize for literature should be awarded by Swedish institutions. But the decision regarding the peace prize he left to a committee appointed by the Norwegian parliament, the Storting.

New Monument Honors American Nobel Laureates
Over the past century more than 270 Americans have earned Nobel Prizes. They are now commemorated in a New York City park. TO THE 2,000-ODD STATUES AND MONUMENTS in New York City you can now add one more, and it's a beauty. It was raised to the memory of Alfred Nobel and all the American recipients of the Nobel Prize, and it was appropriately unveiled last fall in Theodore Roosevelt Park right behind the American Museum of Natural History, one of the world's most visited museums. Roosevelt was the first U.S. winner of the Nobel Peace Prize back in 1906, honored for his collaborating efforts in various peace treaties. Since then, through 2002, another 270 Americans have received the coveted prize. No other nation can boast this many Nobel laureates.

MCCLURE MSS.
The McClure mss., 1865-1949, consist of business and family correspondence and papers of Samuel Sidney McClure, 1857-1949, editor, and family letters and papers of his wife, Mrs. Harriet Sophia (Hurd) McClure, 1855-1929. Biographical material relating to Samuel Sidney McClure may be found in My Autobiography (New York, 1914); Peter Lyon, Success Story, the Life and Times of S. S. McClure (New York, 1963). McClure's papers in the collection consist chiefly of correspondence with poets, novelists, journalists, editors, publishers, artists, lawyers, physicians, clergymen, educators, prominent political figures, his lecture tour manager, and members of his family, particularly his wife. The letters relate primarily to the operation of McClure's newspaper syndicate, 1884-1901, including correspondence with the London office of the syndicate; and to McClure's Magazine, 1894-1926. There are letters and papers concerned with The Evening Mail, with McClure's numerous trips abroad, with materials for articles, books, and lectures and with Knox College. In addition, two letter copybooks, 1891-1892 and 1892-1896, of McClure are included. The collection also contains complete and incomplete speeches, articles and notes on various subjects. Two undated and unidentified typescripts of manuscripts with the titles, "Golden Hinde" and "Roman Mythical History," are included. Individual cards for complete articles and speeches are filed in the Manuscript Index.

The collection contains: 1) McNutt's files from his entrance to Martinsville (Indiana) High School in 1905 to the time when he became governor of Indiana in 1933, including his World War I papers; papers as professor and dean of the Indiana University School of law, including manuscripts of his law lectures; papers relative to his other Indiana University activities, 1913-1932, to the 326 Field artillery, 1924-1933, and the 5th corps area advisory board, 1927-1933 (mostly mimeographed); to the American Legion; to the Cantol wax company of Bloomington, Indiana, of which he was an officer; and to his campaign for governor of Indiana in 1932. 2) Selected papers from his post-gubernatorial career. These relate particularly to his service in the Philippine Islands; his activities as Federal security administrator; his work as Chairman of the War manpower commission; and to the 1940 democratic nomination for president of the U.S. 3) An extensive collection of McNutt's speeches. Included are speeches made during his term as governor of Indiana, 1933-1937, these being almost the only papers in the collection for this period.

John R. Mott
Seek them not. Seek ye first the Kingdom of God." (Suchst Du große Dinge für Dich selbst? Such diese nicht. Such zuerst das Reich Gottes.)
