III. Alfred Nobel And The Nobel Prizes Alfred Nobel is the man who invented dynamite. He is better known today, however, as the man who established some of the most prestigious prizes in the world. Born in 1833 in Stockholm, Sweden, Nobel from his youth had a dream of inventing an explosive so devastating it would deter humans from making war. Instead, his invention made war easier. Though he was a Swede by birth, he was very much an international man, being educated in St. Petersburg, Russia, where his family moved when he was a child. In St. Petersburg, he studied with private tutors, particularly showing interest in chemistry and languages. He mastered Swedish, Russian, English, French, and German. At the age of 17 he began two years of educational travel throughout Germany, France, Italy and to the United States. Then at the age of 19 he became a chemist, working with his father in St. Petersburg. The family returned to Sweden and in 1863 he was a chemist in his father's explosives factory at Heleneborg near Stockholm. In 1864 Nobel received a patent covering detonating charges and percussion caps. Called "The Nobel Igniter," it was to be called at a later time "the greatest discovery ever made in both the principle and practice of explosives." His 1866 invention of dynamite revolutionized mining, road building and tunnel blasting. In 1875 a later improvement was patented as blasting gelatine. In 1887 he patented ballistite, the first of the nitroglycerine smokeless powders. This was to serve as the basis for cordite which was eventually to change the use of firearms.

Christian Authors Database: Broad Evangelicals As early as the 1520s, Protestantism was not synonymous with Reformed theology. The Anabaptist rejected Calvinism , as did Arminius , Lutherans after Luther 's time, and later, John Wesley . By the end of the nineteenth century, American and English Christianity were largely non-Reformed, and increasingly so with the rise of modern revivalism
Most recommended (for entire page):
For the more scholarly reader, William Albright 's works are highly profitable. Halley 's handbook and Vine 's dictionary are essential tools for the serious but untrained Bible student. Also worth reading are the devotions of Oswald Chambers and Hudson Taylor , most books by A. W. Tozer , and the apologetic works of C. S. Lewis . While I do not recommend Scofield 's doctrinal system, his Bible is of such historical importance that it should have a place in any good-sized personal library. L. C. Douglas evangelical pastor and moral novelist. Douglas was educated at Wittenburg Seminary and later became a Congregationalist . Titles: The Big Fisherman; The College Student Facing a Muddled World; Disputed Passage; Forgive Us Our Trespasses; Invitation to Life; Magnificent Obsession; Precious Jeopardy; The Robe; Time to Remember

By: Bryan Padgett John Raleigh Mott was born May 25, 1865 in Livingston Manor, NY. He was the third child, and only son, of four children born to John and Elmira Mott. While still in his youth, his parents moved from New York to Postville, Iowa. Mott became a believer at a young age, and was active in the local Methodist Episcopal Church. At age 16, he enrolled at Upper Iowa University, which was a small Methodist preparatory school and college in Fayette, Iowa. He was very enthusiastic about history and literature, and was even a prize winning debater and orator. He became a charter member of the YMCA, which at the time was an international organization committed to Christian evangelism. In 1885, he transferred to Cornell University, and studied political science and history. In his eyes, he had two options to pursue, law or his father’s business. It was there at Cornell University that Mott’s life would be changed forever. J.K. Studd, brother of C.T. Studd, was invited to come to America by D.L. Moody and leaders of the YMCA to speak at college campuses and share with them a missionary message. On January 14, 1886, he spoke at Cornell University. Mott was late getting to the meeting, and when we arrived he heard J.K. Studd say from the pulpit, “Seekest thou great things for thyself? Seek them not. Seek ye first the kingdom of God.” That night Mott could not sleep as he pondered in his mind and heart those words. Later he found Studd for a private conversation. As one writer observed, “That encounter changed his life – and the world.”
