Jan. 31, 1955, Orlando, Fla.), American Methodist layman and evangelist who shared the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1946 (with Emily Greene Balch ) for his work in international church and missionary movements. Mott became student secretary of the International Committee of the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA), holding this position from 1888 until 1915. He was one of the organizers of the World Missionary Conference (Edinburgh, 1910), which marked the beginning of the modern ecumenical movement and which ultimately resulted in the formation of the World Council of Churches. He was chairman of the Student Volunteer Movement for Foreign Missions (1915-28) and of the International Missionary Council (1921-42) and president of the World's Alliance of YMCAs (1926-37). Mott wrote extensively, his works including The Future Leadership of the Church (1909) and The Larger Evangelism

Mott, John Raleigh John Raleigh Mott (May 25, 1865-January 31, 1955) was born of pioneer stock in Livingston Manor, New York, the third child and only son among four children. His parents, John and Elmira (Dodge) Mott, moved to Postville, Iowa, where his father became a lumber merchant and was elected the first mayor of the town. At sixteen, Mott enrolled at Upper Iowa University, a small Methodist preparatory school and college in Fayette. He was an enthusiastic student of history and literature there and a prizewinner in debating and oratory, but transferred to Cornell University in 1885. At this time he thought of his life's work as a choice between law and his father's lumber business, but he changed his mind upon hearing a lecture by J. Kynaston Studd on January 14, 1886. Three sentences in Studd's speech, he said, prompted his lifelong service of presenting Christ to students: «Seekest thou great things for thyself? Seek them not. Seek ye first the Kingdom of God.» In the summer of 1886, Mott represented Cornell University's Y.M.C.A. at the first international, interdenominational student Christian conference ever held. At that conference, which gathered 251 men from eighty-nine colleges and universities, one hundred men - including Mott - pledged themselves to work in foreign missions. From this, two years later, sprang the Student Volunteer Movement for Foreign Missions.

MOTT John Raleigh Mott was born on May 25, 1865 in Livingston Manor, New York to John Stitt and Elmira Dodge Mott. John R. was the third of four children, having two older and one younger sister. The family soon moved to Postville, Iowa, where the elder Mott prospered as a retail lumber and hardware merchant and became mayor. In this conservative, ethnically diverse environment, young Mott grew to mid-adolescence in a home warmed by Methodist "holiness," which faith he confessed. At 16, he entered Upper Iowa University as a preparatory student, transferring to Cornell University when he was a sophomore. He soon underwent a transformation that directed him toward a career in religion: to train for it, he adopted an almost ascetic discipline of study, exercise, prayer, meditation and Bible study.

Return to the Table of Contents BIOGRAPHY OF GILBERT BEAVER Gilbert Beaver began his work for the YMCA in 1890 as the student secretary of the Pennsylvania state committee. In 1895, he moved to the student division of the International Committee to carry on John Mott's duties while Mott made his first world tour. In 1901 Beaver moved on to the New York City association as intercollegiate branch secretary. In 1909 he went back on the staff of the International Committee to work with student associations. He also worked as executive for the Committee of Friendly Relations among College Students. Beaver was also active outside of the YMCA. During the 1920s he headed the Council of the Fellowship of Reconciliation. Later he served as associate secretary for the College Board of the Presbyterian Church and as justice of the peace in Yorktown Heights, New York.
