This ribbon is in memory of Mother Teresa, a beloved humanitarian known throughout the world for her charity towards the poor and her firm and passionate pro-life stance, who died on September 5, 1997, at age 87 in her Missionaries of Charity home in central Calcutta. Please put one of these ribbons on your web site and link back to this page in honor of one of the world's greatest humanitarians. Words cannot describe the respect I have for Mother Teresa, or the sadness I feel knowing that she has left this world.

Mother Teresa's tale da hun fik Nobel-prisen (1979)

Mother Teresa hed oprindelig Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu.

"America needs no words from me to see how your decision in Roe v. Wade has deformed a great nation. The so-called right to abortion has pitted mothers against their children and women against men. It has sown violence and discord at the heart of the most intimate human relationships. It has aggravated the derogation of the father's role in an increasingly fatherless society. It has portrayed the greatest of gifts a child as a competitor, an intrusion, and an inconvenience. It has nominally accorded mothers unfettered dominion over the independent lives of their physically dependent sons and daughters"
And, in granting this unconscionable power, it has exposed many women to unjust and selfish demands from their husbands or other sexual partners. Human rights are not a privilege conferred by government. They are every human being's entitlement by virtue of his humanity. The right to life does not depend, and must not be declared to be contingent, on the pleasure of anyone else, not even a parent or a sovereign." (Mother Theresa "Notable and Quotable," Wall Street Journal, 2/25/94, p. A14) "Please don't kill the child. I want the child. Please give me the child. I am willing to accept any child who would be aborted, and to give that child to a married couple who will love the child, and be loved by the child. From our children's home in Calcutta alone, we have saved over 3,000 children from abortions. These children have brought such love and joy to their adopting parents, and have grown up so full of love and joy!"

Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu born August 27 in Skopje, in what is now Macedonia, the youngest of three children of an Albanian builder. Becomes novitiate in Loretto order, which ran mission schools in India, and takes name Sister Teresa. Arrives in Calcutta to teach at St. Mary's High School. Takes final vows as a nun. While riding a train to the mountain town of Darjeeling to recover from suspected tuberculosis, she said she received a calling from God "to serve him among the poorest of the poor." Permitted to leave her order and moves to Calcutta's slums to set up her first school. Founds the order of Missionaries of Charity. Opens Nirmal Hriday, or "Pure Heart," a home for the dying, followed next year by her first orphanage. Wins her first prize for her humanitarian work: the Padma Shri award for distinguished service. Over the years, she uses the money from such prizes to found dozens of new homes. Wins Nobel Peace Prize. Persuades Israelis and Palestinians to stop shooting long enough to rescue 37 retarded children from a hospital in besieged Beirut. Has a heart attack while in Rome visiting Pope John Paul II.

Teaching the Faith
Mother Teresa
by John A. Hardon, S.J.
It is an unexpected privilege to write to you on the occasion of Mother Teresa's entrance into eternity. More than twenty years ago, while teaching in New York City, Mother Teresa invited me to speak with her about the new branch of the Missionaries of Our conversation lasted five hours. Since then, I have come to know Mother very well. Teaching her Sisters over these years, throughout the world, has enabled me to know their foundress extraordinarily well. I sincerely consider my friendship with her to be one of the great blessings of my priesthood. My plan here is to share with you something of what I have learned about Mother Teresa on three aspects of her extraordinary life: Mother Teresa, the person, as I have come to know her through years of personal experience; Mother Teresa, the religious, as reflected in the Missionaries of Charity, whom she founded; and, Mother Teresa, the channel of grace, as seen in the transformation of souls that she and her Sisters have been able to accomplish since 1950, when they were first established in Calcutta as an institute of consecrated life. Mother Teresa, the Person

The Bengali chauvinist in me got a thrill: "This is Peter Jennings, tonight live from Calcutta." For the first and only time in my life, the great city I was born and raised in hit the big time. Bengalis love to celebrate their language, their culture, their politics, their fierce attachment to a city that has been famously "dying" for more than a century. They resent with equal ferocity the reflex stereotyping that labels any civic dysfunction anywhere in the world "another Calcutta." And why were the American media in Calcutta? Her life
Youth
Totally unexpected, when Agnes was 9, her father died. It was 1919 and Drana had to raise her three children, Aga (1904), Lazar (1907) and Gonxha (1910) alone. To foresee in their needs she sew wedding dresses, made embroidery and worked hard. In spite of all this, she made time for the education of her children. They prayed every evening, went to church every day, prayed the rosary every day in may and assisted the service for the Holy Virgin. A great and warm attention went also to the poor and needy who came to knock at the door. During the holidays a stay in the pilgrimage place of Letnice, where Our Lady was venerated, was a custom for the family.
Agnes liked to be in church, she liked to read and to pray and to sing. Here mother also took care of an alcoholistic women in the neighbourhood. She went to wash and feed her twice a day and she also took care of a widow with 6 children. When Drana could not go, Agnes went to do this charitable work. And when the widow died, the children were raised in the house as if they were family. Lazar won a scholarship in Austria, Aga followed commercial school and Agnes went to the Lyceum. She studied well. Together with Aga she was in the Choir, she was a soprano, Aga second voice. She also played the mandolin.
Back to the beginning
The call
A great part of their time also went to the Legion of Mary. She helped a father, who had difficulties with the language, to teach catechism and read a lot about Slovenian and Croatian missionaries in India. At twelve she felt for the first time the desire to spend her life for Gods' work, to give it to Him and to let Him decide. But how could she be sure?
