American Prose Since 1945: Realism and Experimentation: Toni Morrison (1931- )
Index African-American novelist Toni Morrison was born in Ohio to a spiritually oriented family. She attended Howard University in Washington, D.C., and has worked as a senior editor in a major Washington publishing house and as a distinguished professor at various universities. Morrison's richly woven fiction has gained her international acclaim. In compelling, large-spirited novels, she treats the complex identities of black people in a universal manner. In her early work The Bluest Eye (1970), a strong-willed young black girl tells the story of Pecola Breedlove, who survives an abusive father. Pecola believes that her dark eyes have magically become blue, and that they will make her lovable. Morrison has said that she was creating her own sense of identity as a writer through this novel: "I was Pecola, Claudia, everybody." Sula (1973) describes the strong friendship of two women. Morrison paints African-American women as unique, fully individual characters rather than as stereotypes. Morrison's

http://beloved.hampshire.edu/ WOW! This is an exhaustively complete treatment of the novel Beloved and is appropriate for casual readers, teachers and students. Its only drawback is the incredible amount of material here. The site is easily navigated, includes background information on the author, the novel, the movie, slavery in North America, race relations, and the Reconstruction period in American History. It has extensive links and a good bibliography of printed materials for even further research. It includes excerpts from a symposium "Exploring Beloved ." The "Creative Expressions" page has a great deal of model student work which should inspire some great class assignments for high school students. For students studying the novel, the site provides an easily understood summary of the story, discussion questions, a myriad of analytical material, and background for accompanying projects on the issues raised by the book/film. Further, it has a bulletin board forum allowing viewers to discuss in the novel and all related information in great detail! The purpose of the site is to engender interest and conversation about

Toni Morrison consists mainly of the author seated behind a desk, discussing her career and her novels. This approach is disorienting as there is no interviewer asking questions or directing the course of the interview. Instead, the video consists of Morrison talking (and it appears to no one in general) and dramatizations from her novels. Sometimes the dramatizations are juxtaposed with the shot of Morrison seated at the desk.
