Stanford University endowment report issued by Stanford Management Company
The Stanford Merged Endowment Pool (MEP) generated an 8.8 percent investment return for the 12 months ended June 30, 2003, according to the Stanford Management Company.
In a volatile period for the financial markets the MEP's well-diversified mix of assets performed consistently well. The one-year return placed Stanford in the top quartile of major college and university endowments. Over the past 10 years, the MEP has achieved an annualized return of 14.0 percent, growing from $2.4 billion to $8.2 billion.
The MEP is Stanford's primary investment pool for the university's endowment and 75 percent of its expendable funds. Income from the Stanford University endowment now supports 16 percent of the university's $2.3 billion budget.

: Article on the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation Category: Foundation Practices Posted: January 16, 2004 09:29 PM Under the title of "The Superfund," the January issue of the San Francisco Magazine contains an article profiling the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. While describing the history and aims of the foundation, the article raises several questions about how the foundation has chosen to conduct its grants program and how it interacts with the fields in which it operates. In short, the article is critical of Moore's highly pro-active grantmaking style, the strongly corporate background of its top leadership, and what the writer describes as an aloof relationship with nonprofit organizations in its fields of activity. Reading the piece, one is left to ask, "Is Moore's business-minded approach just a new, more effective way of doing things in the social sector, or is this problematic behavior for a foundation?" A response to the article (even before it was published) defending the foundation's operation appeared in the San Jose Mercury News Comment welcome. Nobel Prize Winning Chemists Stanford Moore The Nobel Prize In Chemistry 1972 Stanford Moore was born in 1913 in Chicago, Illinois, and grew up in Nashville, Tennessee, where his father was a member of the faculty of the School of Law of Vanderbilt University. His thesis research was in biochemistry in the laboratory of Karl Paul Link. The first lessons that the young graduate student received from the skilled hands of his professor were in the microanalytical methods of Pregl for the determination of C, H, and N. Moore's thesis on was on the characterization of carbohydrates as benzimidazole derivatives. Honors: He shared an award with William H. Stein which was the American Chemical Society Award in chromatography and Electrophoresis; Richards Medal of the American Chemical Society; Linderstrom-Lang Medal; the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1972 shared with William H. Stein and Christian B. Anfinsen "for their contribution to the understanding of the connection between chemical structure and catalytic ativity of the active center of the ribonuclease molecule". Moore's decision to return to Rockefeller was influenced by Herbert Gasser, then the Director of The Rockefeller Institute, who offered to give modest space to Moore and Stein to pursue the theme of research which they had begun with Bergmann or any new lines of investigation that appealed to them. Thus began the collaboration that led to the development of quantitative chromatographic methods for amino acid analysis, their automation, and the utilization of such techniques, in cooperation with younger associates, in the researches in protein chemistry summarized in the Nobel lecture by Moore and Stein.

Research interests: Generally, the relationships among demography and ecology in the evolution of complex sociality. How are age and 'altruism' related? Rainfall and coalition formation? Things like that. One application of such an approach is to the study of early hominid behavioral ecology, and a lot of my current work relates to that. At right, I'm collecting hair from a chimpanzee nest in Ugalla, Tanzania (the hair yields DNA for population genetic work, and the location of nests can tell us about ape use of savanna habitats). jjmoore@ucsd.edu After that initial surprise, some readers may feel smug about progress in their own fields. That would represent a serious misunderstanding. The reason we do not "understand chimpanzees" (or bonobos) is the same as the reason that after about 2,000 years of formal inquiry, we still cannot say confidently that we "understand humans." Cultural ecologists and evolutionary psychologists can point to broad trends, but every such pattern is subject to the criticism, "But what about the Fugawi?" As long as we see instances (tribes, cultures, species) as categorically unique examples of different essences, our understanding is not likely to get much beyond naming the beasts of the field and birds of the air. Discovering the degree to which taxonomic categories (and by implication, genes) constrain sociodemographic continua is a central goal of primatology. Only by recognizing the underlying conceptual continuity can the meaning of local perturbations due to phylogeny be understood; only by recognizing the non-phylogenetic forces promoting categorical essentializing can we understand and compensate for them. This paper is a real contribution to this effort.

Now this quest will be enhanced by a $ 14,206,289 gift from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation to the California Institute of Technology, which will allow scientists at Caltech and Stanford University to collaborate on the building of a Molecular Observatory for Structural Molecular Biology.
The observatory, to be built at Stanford, is a kind of ultra-powerful X-ray machine that will enable scientists from both institutions and around the world to "read" the blueprints of so-called macromolecules down at the level of atoms. Macromolecules, large molecules that include proteins and nucleic acids (DNA and RNA), carry out the fundamental cellular processes responsible for biological life. By understanding their makeup, scientists can glean how they interact with each other and their surroundings, and subsequently determine how they function. This knowledge, while of inherent importance to the study of biology, could also have significant practical applications, including the design of new drugs.
The foundation of this discovery process, says Doug Rees, a Caltech Professor of Chemistry and Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and one of the principal investigators of the project, is that "if you want to know how something works, you first need to know what it looks like.
