Stanford Moore was born in 1913 in Chicago, Illinois, and grew up in Nashville, Tennessee, where his father was a member of the faculty of the School of Law of Vanderbilt University. His developmental years were in a home environment which made the pursuit of knowledge an eagerly adopted undertaking. He had the opportunity to attend a high school administered by the George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville. A skilled teacher of science, R.O. Beauchamp, kindled an interest in chemistry. Moore entered Vanderbilt University undecided between a career in chemistry or aeronautical engineering. The courses which he took in the engineering school presaged a concern for instrumentation. But a gifted professor of organic chemistry, Arthur Ingersoll, succeeded in presenting the study of molecular architecture as an even more appealing discipline. Moore graduated from Vanderbilt (B.A. 1935, summa cum laude ) with a major in chemistry. The faculty recommended him for a Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation Fellowship which took him to the University of Wisconsin where he received his Ph.D. in organic chemistry in 1938.
His thesis research was in biochemistry in the laboratory of Karl Paul Link. The first lessons that the young graduate student received from the skilled hands of his professor were in the microanalytical methods of Pregl for the determination of C, H, and N; Link had recently returned from Europe where he had studied in the laboratory of Fritz Pregl in Graz. This training from Link in microchemistry was especially valuable for a student who was later to be concerned with the quantitative analysis of proteins. Moore's thesis was on the characterization of carbohydrates as benzimidazole derivatives. The experience of bringing that work from the bench to the printed page under Link's guidance marked Moore's transition from a student to a productive scholar.

George Edward Moore
1. Life and Career
Moore's Fellowship ended in 1904; after a spell away from Cambridge, Moore returned there in 1911 to a lectureship in the University and he then lived there for the rest of his life (apart from an extended visit to the U.S.A. in 1940-44). In 1921 he became editor of Mind , the leading British philosophical journal, and in 1925 he became a Professor at Cambridge. These two appointments confirmed his position as the most highly respected British philosopher of the time, and with Wittgenstein back in Cambridge after 1929, Cambridge became the most important centre of philosophy in the world. Moore retired as Professor in 1939 (to be succeeded by Wittgenstein) and as editor of Mind in 1944; these retirements marked not only the end of his pre-eminence, but also of the golden age of Cambridge philosophy.

The Mysterious World Beneath our Feet: Discovering how Plant Roots Respond to Environmental Change Lisa Moore Biological Sciences Stanford University June 2001 Where plant roots are located, how they function, and how they respond to the environment can affect plant performance, community interactions, and ecosystem-level processes. This information also gives scientists a better understanding of how plants interact with their neighbors and environment and is crucial for many aspects of ecosystem ecology, especially in light of ongoing climate change. The goal of my research is to understand how root structure and function respond to climate variability. Although roots are invisible to us, they play a critical role for plants because they are responsible for extracting water and nutrients from the soil. Despite their importance, however, roots and their interactions with a fluctuating environment have received little attention from the scientific community. The data from my project will be useful in many ways. Knowing how different plant species change their root structure and water uptake patterns in response to climate may help ecologists explain aboveground species dynamics. This information is also valuable for scientists who model hydrological or plant processes on regional and global scales. For example, most models assume that water uptake is proportional to root mass. If this assumption is incorrect, then the output of these models will be improved with new information on plant responses to environmental fluctuation.
