FRANÇOIS JACOB , ANDRÉ LWOFF and jacoues monod for their discoveries concerninggenetic control of enzyme and virus synthesis for peace
http://infowebz.com/nobel/1965/
Nobel Laureates in 1965
In 1965 there were overall 10 nobel laureates and they all deserve our acknowledgment for their hard work and their overall support for our world. Nobel Prize was founded in 1901 by the inventor of dynamite, the Nobel Prize is the world's most celebrated and controversial honor. It grants its winners instant celebrity and acclaim for "service to mankind," despite accusations that it is too trendy, arbitrary, and narrow-minded. It is of course the famous international award given yearly since 1901 for achievements in physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and peace. The prize consists of a medal, a personal diploma, and a prize amount! In 1965 there were awarded these great people:
for chemistry:
ROBERT BURNS WOODWARD for his outstanding achievements in the art of organic synthesis.
for literature:
MICHAIL ALEKSANDROVICH SHOLOKHOV for the artistic power and integrity with which, in his epic of the Don, he has given expression to a historic phase in the life of the Russian people. for medicine:
FRANÇOIS JACOB , ANDRÉ LWOFF and JACOUES MONOD for their discoveries concerning genetic control of enzyme and virus synthesis

The 1965 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine was shared by FRANÇOIS JACOB andJACOUES monod who established the operon model. Two other stories
http://starklab.slu.edu/Bio104/Virus.htm
I have heard it was the opinion of others that it [the plague] might be distinguished by the party's breathing upon a piece of glass, where, the breath condensing, there might living creatures be seen by a microscope, of strange, monstrous, and frightful shapes, such as dragons, snakes, serpents, and devils, horrible to behold.
-Daniel Defoe
A Journal of the Plague Year, 1721

Campbell and Reece, Chapter 18
Viruses
(Continues some material from the last lecture)
Second semester (Bio 106) starts with Diversity (the march through the kingdoms). The difficulty (previous lecture) in defining a virus as alive makes it virtually impossible for an introductory textbook to have a good place to cover viruses, so here they are.
TRANSPARENCY (Fig. 18.1) Being small (Protein and DNA) they pass through fine filters, hence an old term, "filterable"
Bacteriophage (phage-eat) protein and DNA
TRANSPARENCY Fig. 18.4 lytic cycle - bacterial cells lyse.
Viruses cause lots of disorders: measles, smallpox, chicken pox, mumps, rabies, flu = influenza, herpes, AIDS, mononucleosis, polio, colds, rubella (German measles), yellow fever, hepatitis Some very fundamental terminology: Antigen - non-self protein (virus coat) Antibody to antigen made by B lymphocytes (white blood cells) History: Vaccines - active immunity (like disease) memory cells of immune system Edward Jenner 1796 "encowment" cowpox, smallpox
