Moissan, Henri,
Moissan, 1906 By courtesy of the Nobel Foundation, Stockholm Nobel Prize for Chemistry for the isolation of the element fluorine and the development of the Moissan electric furnace. After attending the Museum of Natural History and the School of Pharmacy in Paris, Moissan became professor of toxicology (1886) and of inorganic chemistry (1889) at the School of Pharmacy and professor of inorganic chemistry (1900) at the Sorbonne. He took up the study of fluorine compounds in 1884. Two years later, by electrolyzing a solution of potassium fluoride in hydrofluoric acid, he prepared the highly reactive gas fluorine. He made a full study of the properties of the element and its reactions with other elements. In 1892 Moissan developed the electric arc furnace and used it to prepare numerous new compounds and to vaporize substances previously regarded as infusible. He devised a commercially profitable method of producing acetylene. Although he claimed to have synthesized diamonds in his furnace (1893), his success is now seriously doubted. Moissan's scientific works include (1897; "The Electric Furnace")

Henri Moissan was born on September 8, 1852, in Paris , France Moissan continued his studies with inorganic chemistry and, in 1892, he constructed the electric-arc furnace. This furnace was utilized to study and isolate many compounds formerly believed to be indissoluble. He published the studies in 1897 in the book, Moissan received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1906, becoming the second Jew in history to win. Moissan was honored for his work in isolating the element fluorine and the development of the Mossman electric furnace. Shortly after receiving the award, Henri Moissan died unexpectedly in Paris on February 20, 1907. Moissan died at the age of 54. Sources: "Henri Moissan Biography" Britannica Wikipedia . http://www.carondelet.pvt.k12.ca.us/Family/Science/Halogens/fluorine.htm
Name: derived from the Latin word "fleure," meaning to flow. Discovery: Fluorine was first prepared in 1886 by Henri Moissan after seventy-four years of effort by investigators including Davy, Gay-Lussac, Lavoisier, and Thenard. Description: It is a greenish pale yellow acidic gas and has a strong odor. Fluorine is the most reactive of the non-metals, and therefore will combine with most other elements. Source: Fluorine never occurs as a free element in nature. It most commonly occurs in the minerals cryolite, fluorspar, and fluorapatite. 0.06% of the Earth ’s crust is fluorine, which makes fluorine the 13 th most common element in the crust. Uses: As an element, fluorine is used in rocket fuels and helps other materials burn. It was formally used in the production of CFC’s until it was found that compounds in CFC’s were damaging the Earth ’s ozone layer. A safer compounded was substituted. Most fluorine is used in fluorine compounds. The element is used to make uranium hexafluoride, which is needed by the nuclear power industry. Fluoride is in toothpaste. It has been shown to reduce tooth decay. In a process called fluoridation, fluoride is added to a water supply to help prevent tooth

Fluorine's existence had been well known for many years, but all attempts to prepare it had failed - and some experimenters had died in the attempt.
When prepared, it immediately reacted with anything around it and vanished again. Ferdinand Frederic Henri Moissan (1852-1907) French chemist, was born in Paris, in 1852 and died in 1907. Studied in the Agronomy Institute of Paris and later in the Toxicological Institute. In 1900 became professor at the Sorbonne. His first studies were related with biology chemistry. However, his work became more related with inorganic chemistry. In 1886, prepared, for the first time, fluorine by electrolysis of a solution of potassium fluoride and fluoridric acid, with platinum iridium electrodes. Determined the properties of fluorine and along with Dewar , obtained the first samples of liquid and solid fluorine. In 1892, Moissan designed the first electrical oven used to prepare calcium silicon and tungsten carbides. In 1896, prepared artificial diamonds for the first time. Moissan was awarded the Nobel Prize of Chemistry in 1906.
