Mistral, Gabriela (1889-1957) homoerotic As a young woman, she published Sonnets on Death Sonetos de la muerte ), which won first prize in the Santiago literary contest Juegos Florales Sponsor Message.
Her career in education, along with her essays on female friendship published in provincial newspapers, soon led to her involvement with the a state-sponsored school for girls. In 1917, fifty-five of her prose poems, parables, and didactic verses appeared in a series of school texts that were distributed throughout Chile and Latin America. Mistral became a spokeswoman for female education and artistic expression, and eventually developed a populist image as the "saintly schoolteacher" of Latin America. Desolation [1922]) won Mistral international acclaim. Before leaving Mexico under a cloud of controversy (caused by the naming of a rural school after her), Mistral also published Readings for Women Lecturas para mujeres [1923]), a text in prose and verse that celebrates motherhood, childhood education, and nationalism.

Gabriela Mistral is one of the great Chilean poets of the 20th century. She started writing poetry as a young schoolteacher when a romance ended tragically with the young man's suicide. She continued to teach and write until her poetry gained national and international attention.
Her poetry often explores themes of childhood, love, and loss. But, as you can see in several of these poems, her work often reaches inward to a deep sense of inner awakening. Her Life
Her Work Tala ... Courtney's Home Her Life TOP OF THE PAGE Originally known as Lucila Godoy y Alcayaga, Gabriela Mistral may not be one of the most well-known Latin-American poets of the twentieth century, but her passionate poetry and distinctive voice gained her the honor of becoming the first Latin American woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1945.
A member of the cultural committee of the League of Nations and Chilean consul to Madrid, Lisbon, Nice, and Naples, Mistral combined her educational ministry with her poetic talent to influence those she visited. In 1922 she was able to further her influence in Mexico, where upon the invitation of Jose Vasconcelos, she helped enhance the Mexican government’s attempts at educational reform.
Education and reform were constant focuses of Mistral throughout her life, and it is quite possible that through her travels and exposure as an educator, her poetry became well known and valued by those with whom she came in contact. Having lived through two world wars, Gabriela Mistral’s poetry occasionally slipped through the cracks of the cultural realm while the rest of the world paid more attention to political issues and literary works. This fact may have influenced the long-term popularity of Mistral’s work, but her poetry remains full of emotion and sentiment, portraying her thoughts about suffering, love, and nostalgia in a distinct and passionately intimate manner.

Z Gabriela Mistral Biography Gabriela Mistral was the pseudonym of Lucila de María del Perpetuo Socorro Godoy Alcayaga (April 7, 1889 - January 10, 1957), Chilean poet, educator, diplomat and feminist, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1945. The central themes in her poems are love, a mothers love, painful personal memories and sorrow and recovery.
Life
Gabriela Mistral was born in Vicuña, where she attended primary and secondary school. Her father Juan Gerónimo Godoy Villanueva abandoned the family when she was 3. By the age of sixteen, she started to support herself and her mother by working as a teachers aide. Her mother, Petronila Alcayaga, died in 1929. Gabriela dedicated the first section of the book Tala (Tree Fall) to her.
In 1904 she published some early poems, such as Ensoñaciones, Carta Íntima (Intimate Letter) and Junto al Mar, in the local newspaper El Coquimbo de La Serena, using various pseudonyms.
In 1906, while working as a teacher, she met Romeo Ureta, a railway worker, who would become the great love of her life. He killed himself in 1909. His death left profound marks on her works.
