EDUCATIONAL The Nobel Prize in Literature 1945 Presentation Speech by Hjalmar Gullberg, Member of the Swedish Academy , on December 10, 1945 One day a mother's tears caused a whole language, disdained at that time in good society, to rediscover its nobility and gain glory through the power of its poetry. It is said that when , the first of the two poets bearing the name of the Mediterranean wind, had written his first verses in French as a young student, his mother began to shed inexhaustible tears. An ignorant country woman from Languedoc, she did not understand this distinguished language. Mistral then wrote , recounting the love of the pretty little peasant for the poor artisan, an epic that exudes the perfume of the flowering land and ends in cruel death. Thus the old language of the troubadours became again the language of poetry. The Nobel Prize of 1904 drew the world's attention to this event. Ten years later the poet of died. In that same year, 1914, the year in which the First World War broke out, a new Mistral appeared at the other end of the world. At the Floral Games of Santiago de Chile, Gabriela Mistral obtained the prize with some poems dedicated to a dead man. Her story is so well known to the people of South America that, passed on from country to country, it has become almost a legend. And now that she as at last come to us, over the crests of the Cordilleran Andes and across the immensities of the Atlantic, we may retell it once again.

Infancia y Autobiografía en Gabriela Mistral: problematización de clase, genero y etnia en el "Poema de Chile." Por Soledad Falabella University of California, Berkeley Al morir Gabriela Mistral en 1957, deja inconcluso un largo texto, el cual había estado tratando de terminar hace mucho tiempo.  Se trata de Poema de Chile , cuya primera publicación es 10 años más tarde, en 1967.  Este texto, cuyos inicios datan de alrededor del año '20, se configura como una "obra en marcha", esto es una obra en la cual el transcurso del tiempo y la vivencia (privada) de la autora se entretejen.  En efecto, la Mistral escribe y re-escribe los poemas durante los restantes 37 años de su vida de tal manera que las versiones se van enriqueciendo en la medida que avanzan los años, generando así una obra compleja y heterogénea. Es muy decidor el hecho de que no haya casi ningún trabajo crítico de peso en torno a este texto. Es efectivamente una tarea que ha sido olvidada por varias décadas desde la controversial publicación del Poema en 1967. El Poema es una de las obras poéticas de Mistral más comprometidas políticamente, lo que lo convierte en un espacio peligroso y subversivo. Hay en éste evidencia de luchas en cuanto a identidades estereotípicas, como la maternidad y la cultura indígena, las que son cuestionadas o derechamente rechazadas, lo que convierte al

In 1924 appeared Ternura [Tenderness], a volume of poetry dominated by the theme of childhood; the same theme, linked with that of maternity, plays a significant role in Tala , poems published in 1938. Nobel Prize for Literature Of Spanish, Basque, and Indian descent, Mistral grew up in a village of northern Chile and became a schoolteacher at 15, advancing later to the rank of college professor. Throughout her life she combined writing with a career as an educator, cultural minister, and diplomat; her diplomatic assignments included posts in Madrid, Lisbon, Genoa, and Nice. Her reputation as a poet was established in 1914 when she won a Chilean prize for three "Sonetos de la muerte" ("Sonnets of Death"). They were signed with the name by which she has since been known, which she coined from those of two of her favourite poets, Gabriele D'Annunzio and . A collection of her early works, (1922; "Desolation"), includes the poem "Dolor," detailing the aftermath of a love affair that was ended by the suicide of her lover.
