The Emergence of a National Economy:
The United States from Independence
to the Civil War
Part II in the
Early American Economic Thought Series
Series Editors: William J Barber Malcolm Rutherford
Steven G Medema Marianne Johnson
and Warren J Samuels The period covered in this second part of the Early American Economic Thought Series , from revolution and independence to the American Civil War, was as much characterised by important policy debates on nation building as by a tendency within American economics towards greater sophistication and independence from European thinking. As in the first part of this series, this set offers access to fascinating historical resource texts – all reproduced in digitally-enhanced facsimile. In the immediate post-colonial period, one of the first issues of contention that arose concerned that of industrialisation, or the respective roles of agriculture and manufacturing, and the parallel debate over the division of economic powers between states and the federal government. These disagreements expressed themselves in the political division between Republicans and Federalists. The individuals representing the extremes of this argument were Thomas Jefferson and George Logan on the side of agriculture and republicanism, and Alexander Hamilton on the side of industrialisation and federalism. Writers such as William Barton and Tench Coxe occupied a middle ground by advocating a ‘balanced economy’.

In Debt to Shays: The Bicentennial of an Agrarian Rebellion , David Szatmary’s Shays’ Rebellion: The Making of an Agrarian Insurrection , and Leonard Richards’ Shays’s Rebellion: The American Revolution’s Final Battle are all excellent surveys of the causes and consequences of the Rebellion.

“As early as the 27th of June, 1786, a town-meeting was held in Groton, called at the written request of sixty-eight—a very large majority of its legal voters—to take into consideration the condition of the country. The warrant for the meeting contained fifteen articles to be acted upon; and they were all referred to a Committee, chosen for the purpose, consisting of Dr. Benjamin Morse, Capt. Job Shattuck, Ensign Moses Childs, Capt. Asa Lawrence, and Capt. Zachariah Fitch, to whom ‘discretionary powers’ were given to act as they pleased; and ‘to correspond with other Committees of any towns in the Commonwealth relative to our public grievances; and to draw up a petition to lay before the General Court for a redress of the same.’

Getting Into Medical School in the Good Old Days
Good for Whom? The First Nicholas E. Davies Memorial Lecture
Gert H. Brieger
Admission to medical school became selective in the 1920s and by the 1960s became increasingly expensive for applicants. The stories of three applicants, a white man who easily walked into medical school in 1908, a black woman who overcame a double hurdle in the 1930s, and a white man who entered medical school by court order, provide insight into the admissions process and its changes. The Davies Award was established in the memory of Nicholas E. Davies, MD, FACP, who died in an airplane crash in April 1991, shortly before he was to become President of the American College of Physicians. Everyone who knew him admired Nick Davies for
