Sus antepasados Ingleses emigraron en 1630 a Estados Unidos desde Saffron Walden. Su padre era físico. De joven le interesaban las mariposas y las polillas y publicó dos artículos sobre mariposas. Estudió en la Universidad de Harvard donde obtuvo su título en 1908 y en 1928 fue profesor de Patología. Perteneció al Consultorio del Hospital General de Massachusetts y dirigió el Laboratorio Thorndike Memorial y el Hospital de la ciudad de Boston. Desde que estudiaba estaba interesado en los desordenes de la sangre. Asimismo estudios sobre Artritis, cáncer, deficiencias de alimentación y la influencia que la deficiencia de la Vitamina B en la dieta provocaba la denominada polineuritis alcohólica y los aspectos sociales de las enfermedades están presentes en sus escritos. Además estudió la coagulación de la sangre, la transfusión de sangre, las plaquetas y las enfermedades causadas por una anemia prolongada. Asimismo vio la relación entre los problemas sanguíneos y el envenenamiento producido por efectos industriales. También estuvo interesado en la leucemia, enfermedades linfáticas. Tras la concesión del Nobel en 1934 realizó trabajos en colaboración con Edwin J. Cohn para demostrar la eficacia de las fracciones de ciertas sustancias del hígado y demostró el valor de la reacciones reticulocitas en la evolución de los procedimientos terapéuticos. También aumentó el conocimiento de las funciones gastro-intestinales y de la terapia con hierro para la anemia y el conocimiento de otros aspectos de este tipo de enfermedades.
