American History
Michelson, Albert (1852-1931), scientist. Although Albert Michelson was born in a Polish village to a Jewish father and a gentile mother, he became both a symbol and a star of American science as it stood in his time. He was three when his family immigrated to a California mining town, itself a symbol of American restlessness and hustle. Michelson graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1873, ranking first among his classmates in optics. Unlike most Americans in the frenzied materialism of the Gilded Age, Michelson was attracted to science and found his m©tier in the sort of work most congenial to American scientists of his day: instrumentation and measurement. The ardent collection of discrete facts, rather than patient, long-range investigative projects, dominated American science in those years.

He was able to get useful values with homemade apparatus. Feeling the need to study optics before he could be qualified to make real progress, he travelled to Europe in 1880 and spent two years in Berlin, Heidelberg, and Paris, resigning from the navy in 1881. Upon his return to the United States, he determined the velocity of light to be 299,853 km s , a value that remained the best for a generation. When it was bettered, Michelson bettered it. Albert Michelson, the first chair of Physics Department at Clark University at Worcester, was the first to accurately measure the speed of light. Albert A. Michelson was the first Nobel laureate of the University of Chicago for his measurements of the speed of light. It was at Clark University that Michelson conducted fundamental research leading to the determination of an international standard of measurement, the meter, in terms of a natural constant, the wave length of cadmium light. His numerous contributions to the physics of light included the invention of optical precision instruments, many of which he used in experiments that marked the beginning of modern physics.

At age two, he and his parents immigrated to the United States. From New York, the family made its way to Virginia City, Nevada, and San Francisco, California. At age 17 Michelson entered the US Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD, and graduated in 1873. As a student Michelson was fascinated with the sciences in general, and the problem of measuring the speed of light in particular. After two years of study in Europe, Michelson was assigned to the U.S. Naval Academy as an officer instructor in physics and chemistry. He conducted his first determination of the speed of light while at the Naval Academy (published in ). This measurement remained the best for a generation, and when it was finally improved ( ), Michelson was the one who did it. In 1881 he accepted a position as professor of physics at the Case School of Applied Science in Cleveland and concentrated on improving his interferometer. By 1887, Michelson and colleague Edward Williams Morley conducted what was to be known as the Michelson-Morley experiment . Their experiment showed that there was no significant motion of the Earth relative to the ether , the hypothetical medium in which light waves were supposed to travel. This result later became the foundation of Einstein's Theory of Relativity.

His numerous contributions to the physics of light included the invention of optical precision instruments, many of which he used in experiments that marked the beginning of modern physics. While in Europe, Michelson began constructing an interferometer, a device designed to split a beam of light in two, send the parts along perpendicular paths, then bring them back together. If the light waves had, in the interim, fallen out of step, interfererence fringes of alternating light and dark bands would be obtained. From the width and number of those fringes, unprecedently delicate measurements could be made, comparing the velocity of light rays travelling at right angles to each other.

    ALBERT ABRAHAM MICHELSON
    By:Brienna Putz Abstract :
Albert Michelson revolutionized science by measuring the speed of light with his interferometer and proving that there was, in fact no such thing as Ether. Michelson also measured the diameter of Betelgeuse with a similar interferometer. Michelson’s life long work of measuring the velocity of light and applying this knowledge to applicable problems earned him the Nobel Prize.
    Michelson's Background :
Albert Abraham Michelson was born on December 19, 1852, in Strelno, Prussia now known as Strzelno, Poland, but was brought to the United States when he was two years old. After living in several states he spent his teenage years in San Francisco. Michelson went to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland to receive his degree in physics (in 1873) and stayed there as a teacher of science from 1875 to 1879. During his stay at the Naval Academy Michelson became interested in accurately measuring the velocity of light, but with his background in physic Michelson sought to expand his optics knowledge by spending two years in Berlin, Heidelberg, and Paris. Michelson achieved his goal of acutely measuring the velocity of light with an interferometer just after finishing his studies and returning to the United States Contribution to Optics: The Michelson Interferometer
Those same experiments are the bais which won Michelson a Nobel Prize in 1907 Figure 1:The Michelson interferometer consists of a half-transparent mirror that divides a light beam into two equal parts (A and B), one of which is transmitted to a fixed mirror and the other of which is reflected to a movable mirror. The interferometer is turned so that half beam A is oriented parallel to the Earth's motion and half beam B is perpendicular to it. [1]
