Sir Thomas Browne October 19 October 19 ) was an English author of varied works that disclose his wide learning in diverse fields including medicine religion science and the esoteric Browne's writings display a deep curiosity towards the natural world, influenced by the Scientific revolution of Baconian enquiry . In counterbalance his Christian faith exuded tolerance and goodwill towards humanity in an often intolerant era. A consummate literary craftsman, Browne's works are permeated by frequent reference to Classical and Biblical sources and to his own highly ideosyncratic personality. His literary style varies from a rich, unusual prose according to genre, ranging from rough note-book observations to the highest baroque eloquence. Although described as suffering from melancholia Browne was also capable of subtle humour in his writings. The literary critic Robert Sencourt succinctly assessed him as "an instance of scientific reason lit up by mysticism in the Church of England."

Any body of men who believe in hell will persecute whenever they have the power.
Joseph McCabe What Gods Cost Men If a single one of these gentlemen is correct, if a believer of any type is right, the essential truth for man, the real drama of life, in comparison with which the secular story of the race , is a puppet-show and the unfolding of the universe is a triviality, is the dialogue of the immortal soul and the eternal God. Yet it seems that there is nothing in the world so hard to discover as this. The theory refutes itself.
Joseph McCabe The Psychology of Religion Little Blue Book 446, p. 47 An idea or institution may arise for one reason and be maintained for quite a different reason.
Joseph McCabe The Psychology of Religion Little Blue Book 446, p. 48 The theist and the scientist are rival interpreters of nature, the one retreats as the other advances.

It is so easy just to drift along. Some people go through school as if they thought they were doing their families a favour. On a job, they work along in a humdrum way, interested only in their salary check. They don't have a goal. When anyone crosses them up, they take their marbles and walk out. The people who go places and do things make the most of every situation. They are ready for the next thing that comes along on the road to their goal. They know what they want and are willing to go an extra mile. (William Menninger)
