George Catlett Marshall
In his position as chief of staff, Marshall urged military readiness prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, later became responsible for the building, supplying, and, in part, the deploying of over eight million soldiers. From 1941 he was a member of the policy committee that supervised the atomic studies engaged in by American and British scientists. The war over, Marshall resigned in November, 1945.
For one year during the Korean War General Marshall was secretary of defence, a civilian post in the U. S. Cabinet. Having resigned from this post in September, 1951, three months before his seventy-first birthday, he retired from public service, thereafter performing those ceremonial duties the public comes to expect of its famous men. George Catlett Marshall was a soldier best remembered for what he did for peace. Born in Pennsylvania, Marshall developed his leadership skills at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia. As a junior Army officer, Marshall earned a reputation for blunt honesty and brilliant problem-solving. He held important posts during World War I, and in World War II, Marshall became head of the Army. After the war, Marshall put his problem-solving skills to an even more important use. As secretary of state, he convinced Congress to give Europe $13 billion to help rebuild. This very popular "Marshall Plan" brought hope and peace to many nations. For his great achievement, Marshall received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1953.

George C. Marshall
Introduction One of the most important figures of the 20th century, George C. Marshall exerted much influence during World War II and the postwar years. U.S. presidents and members of Congress, as well as world leaders, listened to Marshall because of his honesty, fairness, and trustworthiness. His personal qualities of selfless character, patriotism, leadership, integrity, and human compassion were admired by people who worked with him. As U.S. Army chief of staff during the war, General Marshall raised and prepared the ground and air forces to help the Allies fight the most destructive war in history, against the Axis nations of Germany, Italy, and Japan. But Marshall hated war. When he served as secretary of state after the war, he proposed to help the European countries rebuild their economies, and rebuild the peace. A measure of a man should include a few of the many statements by those who knew and worked with him, and those who hold Marshall to be their role model in public service. President Harry S. Truman

ABOUT GEORGE C. MARSHALL
A Brief Biography of the Unknown Famous American and a Leader for the Ages
George Catlett Marshall was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, on December 31, 1880. After a childhood best described as "unremarkable," he enrolled in the Virginia Military Institute, with a burning desire to outshine his older brother’s performance. At VMI, he began to demonstrate his talent for leadership. By his senior year, he had risen to first captain—the academy’s highest-ranking cadet. His first career break came in 1906, when he was selected to attend the Army Infantry and Calvary School at Fort Leavenworth. In 1913, he was dispatched to the Philippines to serve as an aide for General Hunter Liggett. It marked his first high-level staff position, and Marshall quickly demonstrated his aptitude for the job.
While transforming America’s outmoded, outmanned army into a formidable fighting machine, Marshall began pushing the President to prepare for World War II and propel an isolationist, risk-averse Congress to action. As the war progressed, Marshall’s job increased in scope and importance. Deftly managing the personalities and egos of Franklin Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, Douglas MacArthur, and George Patton, Marshall attained an unprecedented level of cooperation between the Army and Navy, and achieved unity of command among the Allied forces. What’s more, though it took him nearly two years, he convinced Allied leaders to pursue a "Germany—first" strategy-a concept now recognized as the decisive factor in winning the war. In 1943

George C. Marshall
George Catlett Marshall was one of the great American statesmen of the century. He played a crucial role in international affairs from 1939 to 1951 the years that shaped the second half of the century. Until 1945, he was in the military service of the United States. As Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army from 1939 to 1945 he was, in the words of Winston Churchill, the "true architect of victory"in the West European arena of World War II. Marshall was born on December 31, 1880, in Uniontown, Pennsylvania. He graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1901; afterwards, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant. On September 1, 1939, he was promoted to Chief of Staff with the rank of General. Marshall was named General of the Army on December 16, 1944. In a succession of positions of great responsibility between 1945 and 1951, Marshall devoted his efforts to the cause of international peace and security. He spent a year in China in 1945-46 as President Truman's representative, attempting without success to bring about a peaceful resolution to the conflict between the nationalists and the communists. As Secretary of State from 1947 to 1949, he developed an economic program, the Marshall Plan , that turned the tide of Communism in war-ravaged Western Europe.
