Nelson Mandela: Inaugural Address, May 10, 1994 Nelson Mandela was trained as a lawyer, and joined the African National Congress in 1944 to aid in its struggle against apartheid. During over 25 years in prison he became the world's most famous political prisoner. After a long campaign of resistance within South Africa and political and economic pressure from without, President F. W. de Klerk ended the government ban on the ANC and freed Mandela in 1990, whereupon he assumed leadership of the organization. He worked tirelessly over the next few years to negotiate an end to apartheid and minority rule, gaining widespread respect and support in the process. National elections were held in April 1994, and on May 10th of that year Nelson Mandela was inaugurated as the first Black president of South Africa. Mandela, Nelson 1918-Still alive in 2002 First South African black president by Rit Nosotro Nelson Mandela was a great political leader that fought against racism in his country, South Africa. Mandela, who was born in 1918 in Untata, South Africa, was the son of a Xhesaspeaking Thembu chief. Nelson studied in the university of Fort Hare. There he became involved in political struggle against Racism. In 1940 he was expelled for causing riots. Later in the university of South Africa, Nelson Mandela completed the studies he was doing in the previous university. Finally he studied law in Johannesburg and became involve with the African National Congress (ANC). Helping to establish the ANC's Youth League in 1944, Mandela became the president in 1951. In 1952 Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo, who was his friend, became the first black men to open a law practice in South Africa. During the late 1950's, Nelson and Oliver, and other people turned the ANC into a more military direction. After the police massacred 69 black, the ANC abandoned the nonviolence strategy and Mandela helped establish the ANC's Military Wing in December 1961. After Mandela was named commander of the Military Wing he went to Algeria for military training. Later in August of 1961 Nelson was arrested in South Africa for leaving the country illegally. In June 1964 Mandela was found guilty of other charges and sentenced to life imprisonment. Nelson and other political leaders were able to keep contact with the movement, regardless of the maximum security in the Robben Island Prison. In 1994 the autobiography that Mandela wrote in prison was published. Nelson was moved to another Max-Security prison; and he became a symbol of resistance. Many of the world leaders demanded for his release. In February 1990 Mandela was released from prison.

In February 1990 he was released from prison on the orders of state president F W de Klerk and in July 1991 was elected, unopposed, to the presidency of the ANC. In December 1991 the ANC began constitutional negotiations with the government and in February 1993 Mandela and President de Klerk agreed to the formation of a government of national unity after free, nonracial elections (that took place in 1994). Relations between Mandela and de Klerk deteriorated when former members of de Klerk's security forces were prosecuted in March 1996. He stepped down as ANC president in December 1997 and was replaced by his former deputy Thabo Mbeki.
