In 1952 he became ANC deputy national president, advocating nonviolent resistance to apartheid . However, after a group of peaceful demonstrators were massacred (1960) in Sharpeville, Mandela organized a paramilitary branch of the ANC to carry out guerrilla warfare against the white government. After being acquitted (1962) on charges of treason, he was arrested (1964) and convicted of sabotage and sentenced to life in prison, where he became the leading symbol of South Africa's oppressed black majority. Released in 1990 as an expression of President de Klerk 's committment to change, Mandela was elected (July, 1991) ANC president after a triumphal global tour. He represented the ANC in the turbulent negotiations that led to establishment of majority rule. Mandela and de Klerk were jointly awarded the Nobel peace prize in 1993. In South Africa's first multiracial elections (1994), Mandela was elected president, and served until 1999, when Thabo Mbeki succeeded him. Continuing Mandela's Long Walk to Freedom
on the Internet at the Online BookStore (OBS)
Nelson Mandela's Long Walk to Freedom began as scraps of paper, buried under the floor of his prison cell. He was incarcerated in South Africa for more than a quarter of a century, part of that time in the prison of Robben Island , about which he writes:
"Its isolation made it not simply another prison, but a world of its own, far removed from the one we had come from. The high spirits with which we had left Pretoria had been snuffed out by its stern atmosphere; we were face to face with the realization that our life would be unredeemably grim. In Pretoria, we felt connected to our supporters and our families; on the island, we felt cut off, and indeed we were. We had the consolation of being with each other, but that was the only consolation." Now Nelson Mandela, joint winner of the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize with Fredrik Willem DeKlerk, is President of South Africa, a free and multiracial democracy. And now, those bits of paper, his once confiscated and forbidden manuscript, have been transformed into digital bits for all to freely read and access on the global Internet. The online continuation of the Long Walk to Freedom has begun.

Nelson Mandela gets warm welcome in Gaza
Former South African leader calls on Israel to pull out of occupied lands
October 20, 1999
Web posted at: 9:34 p.m. EDT (0134 GMT) JERUSALEM (CNN) Palestinians gave Nelson Mandela a hero's welcome when he visited Gaza Wednesday, and the former South African president said he would press Israel to release all Palestinian prisoners. "It is a realization of a dream for me to be here to come and pledge my solidarity with my friend Yasser Arafat," Mandela said. Mandela also addressed a special session of the Palestinian assembly, telling legislators that "the histories of our two peoples correspond in such painful and poignant ways that I intensely feel myself at home amongst my compatriots." Mandela, who fought against white minority rule in his homeland, and Arafat, the Palestinian leader, say they nurtured each other through some of their most difficult times as each worked toward the goal of self-determination for their peoples.

"I looked into the vast dome of blue emptiness that stretched out above me in all directions and the illusion was still there, the size and speed, and what information they were sending to mother earth." "A good head and good heart are always a formidable combination. But when you add to that a literate tongue or pen, then you have something very special." "We must use time creatively, and forever realize that the time is always ripe to do right." Only free men can negotiate. Prisoners cannot enter into contracts.

Home E-Mail Download Lessons Interactive Quiz ... South America Nelson Mandela In 1962, Mandela began a twenty-seven year stay in prison. Most of his confinement was spent during hard labor at the notorious Robben Island maximum-security prison. Mandela’s government was praised for its treatment of South Africa’s white minorities. One white South African told our class in 1996 that "[Mandela] has treated us better than we treated him.” In the interviews I conducted over the Internet in the late 1990s, no South African of any race had kind words for apartheid. Mandela's government had its critics. Crime increased during his term, but the violent war between the races ended. Every South African I spoke with said life is better today than it was before Mandela took power. Mandela married for the third time on his 80th birthday in 1998. A year later he retired from the presidency. The 400-year-old prison on Robben Island is now a museum. NEXT: Africa Today To cite this page:

Mandela, Nelson Rolihlahla
Mandela was born into the Thembu sub-tribe nobility of the Xhosa people in Mveso, South Africa, initially raised by his parents there and in Qunu. He was early marked for great things, and was the first in his family to attend school. Soon after his father died, when young Nelson was nine, he was taken to the larger village of Mqhekewenzi, the Thembu provincial capital, where he became the ward of the chief-regent, Jongintaba, for the next 10 years, although he continued to see his mother on visits. Texas Looking to adopt? Pregnant? He attended university, became a lawyer and African National Congress activist, went into exile, but was eventually arrested and imprisoned for 27 years, mostly on Robben Island. He was released in 1990 and then elected to be the first president of the new South Africa, retiring in 1999.
