Runner-Up: Mohandas Gandhi The Necessary Evil? Why Hitler Is Not Person of the Century Monday, Jan. 3, 2000 India is Gandhi's country of birth; South Africa his country of adoption. He was both an Indian and a South African citizen. Both countries contributed to his intellectual and moral genius, and he shaped the liberatory movements in both colonial theaters. He is the archetypal anticolonial revolutionary. His strategy of noncooperation, his assertion that we can be dominated only if we cooperate with our dominators, and his nonviolent resistance inspired anticolonial and antiracist movements internationally in our century. Both Gandhi and I suffered colonial oppression, and both of us mobilized our respective peoples against governments that violated our freedoms.

45. Ingrid Jonker
Biography and a poem. The poem was read by nelson mandela in his inaugural address.
http://www.sahistory.org.za/pages/people/jonker,i.htm
Ingrid Jonker
Ingrid Jonker, the daughter of Abraham Jonker and Beatrice Cilliers, was born on a farm near Kimberley on 19 September 1933. Her father and mother had separated prior to her birth and her grandparents, with whom she, her elder sister, Anna, and mother were living, decided to move to a farm near Cape Town. Five years after the relocation her grandfather passed away, leaving the four women to a rootless existence moving from room to room in Cape Town. At times they were subjected to severe poverty, as Beatrice could not find work.
In 1943 Ingrid';s mother passed away and the two sisters were sent to school in Cape Town. Eventually they moved to their father';s home, where he had built a new life with his third wife and their children. Ingrid and Anna were treated as outsiders and the rift that developed between Ingrid and her father during this period threw a shadow over the rest of her life. Ingrid started writing poetry at the age of six and her early works reflect a lyrical style reminiscing on her childhood. She produced her first collection of poems, called Na die Somer (After the Summer), at the age of sixteen and although her work interested publishers she was advised to wait before going into print. Eventually, after many delays, her first book of poems, called Onvlugting (Escape), was published in 1956.

A ship could carry more goods to and from India than the largest caravans, but Europeans could only guess that sailors could circumnavigate, or go around, Africa. Prince Henry helped unlock the secrets of Africa. Henry set up a school for sailors to learn the secrets of the ocean. He paid for many sailing expeditions out of the Portuguese treasury. Henry also employed cartographers who created the most sophisticated maps of their time. The maps made it possible for sailors to learn from previous expeditions. people believed the world was flat. He knew that Africa was more than endless land, and that if his sailors could circumnavigate the continent; he would find a water route to India.

Nelson Mandela, 1990 in full NELSON ROLIHLAHLA MANDELA (b. July 18, 1918, Umtata, Cape of Good Hope, S.Af.), South African black nationalist and statesman whose long imprisonment (1962-90) and subsequent ascension to the presidency (1994) symbolized the aspirations of South Africa's black majority. The son of Chief Henry Mandela of the Xhosa-speaking Tembu tribe, Nelson Mandela was educated at University College of Fort Hare and the University of Witwatersrand and qualified in law in 1942. He joined the African National Congress (ANC) in 1944 and in 1949 became one of that black-liberation group's leaders, helping to revitalize the organization and engaging in increasingly militant resistance against the apartheid policies of the ruling National Party. Mandela went on trial for treason in 1956-61 but was acquitted. During this extended trial he divorced his first wife and married Nomzamo Winifred (Winnie Mandela); they divorced in 1996. After the massacre of unarmed Africans by police forces at Sharpeville in 1960 and the subsequent banning of the ANC, Mandela abandoned his nonviolent stance and began advocating acts of sabotage against the South African regime. In 1962 he was jailed again and sentenced to five years' imprisonment. In 1963 the imprisoned Mandela and several other men were tried for sabotage, treason, and violent conspiracy in the celebrated
