Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born in Transkei, South Africa on July 18, 1918. His father was Chief Henry Mandela of the Tembu Tribe. Mandela himself was educated at University College of Fort Hare and the University of Witwatersrand and qualified in law in 1942. He joined the African National Congress in 1944 and was engaged in resistance against the ruling National Party's apartheid policies after 1948. He went on trial for treason in 1956-1961 and was aquitted in 1961.
During his years in prison, Nelson Mandela's reputation grew steadily. He was widely accepted as the most significant black leader in South Africa and became a potent symbol of resistance as the anti-apartheid movement gathered strength. He consistently refused to compromise his political position to obtain his freedom.
Nelson Mandela was released on February 18, 1990. After his release, he plunged himself wholeheartedly into his life's work, striving to attain the goals he and others had set out almost four decades earlier. In 1991, at the first national conference of the ANC held inside South Africa after the organization had been banned in 1960, Mandela was elected President of the ANC while his lifelong friend and colleague, Oliver Tambo, became the organisation's National Chairperson. Nelson Mandela
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Nelson Mandela Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (born July 18 ), was the first democratically elected President of South Africa , having previously been a prominent anti- apartheid activist there. Initially committed to non-violence, he later became a guerrilla leader and was involved in the planning of underground armed resistance activities, such as sabotage . Mandela's 27-year imprisonment, much of which he spent in a tiny prison cell on Robben Island , became one of the most widely publicised examples of apartheid's injustices. Upon his release in 1990, the policy of reconciliation he pursued enabled a peaceful transition to a new, democratic South Africa - an enormous achievement which many South Africans believe would have been impossible without his influence. Despite controversy surrounding him, Mandela is one of the most celebrated and respected people of modern times, having received over a hundred awards over four decades. He is in his 80s, yet he still continues to voice his opinion on controversial issues, while enjoying the prestige accorded to him as an elder statesman In South Africa he is known as Madiba , an honorary title adopted by elders of Mandela's clan. The title has come to be synonymous with Nelson Mandela.

Nelson Mandela was the first black president of South Africa and a legendary figure of the African National Congress, or ANC. From 1964 to 1990, Mandela was imprisoned for opposing South Africa's white minority government and its policy of racial separation, known as apartheid . Instead of disappearing from view, Mandela became a martyr and worldwide symbol of resistance to racism. In 1993 Mandela and the president who released him, F.W. de Klerk, shared the Nobel Peace Prize. Mandela was elected the country's president in 1994. He served until 1999, when he was succeeded by his deputy Thabo Mbeki. Mandela's wife Winnie became a powerful figure in her own right while Mandela was imprisoned; her entanglement in a series of scandals led to the couple's estrangement in 1992 and her dismissal from his cabinet in 1995... Peter Tosh and Nelson Mandela are two men who dedicated their lives to fight for equal rights. They are united by common goals but walked on different paths in their struggles against the oppressors. The major commonality, which made both men brilliant leaders and revolutionary thinkers, was their passion. The passion they had for their beliefs and turning their visions into reality. As the teenage years moved on for these two men, their paths towards savior only diverged more. Mandela was moving on in his education attending a Wesleyan secondary school and later the University of Fort Hare. It was during his time in college that he saw the legal system as a way to liberate the oppressed. He was kicked out of the university for his involvement in a protest and later finished a Bachelors of Art while serving as a clerk in Johannesburg. He became involved politically and decided he was going to aid his people by attacking the legal system as a professional attorney. Nelson Mandela earned the nickname of the "Black Pimpernel" because of his success at avoiding the police. As a political activist and lawyer in the 1950’s he was banned, arrested and imprisoned by the South African government. In order to keep up his work and not rot away in a cell, he went underground and became a master of disguise eluding the authorities and thus earning the title of the "Black Pimpernel" (
