On this day in 1911, the Nobel Prize-winning Egyptian novelist Naguib Mahfouz was born. Despite a fatwa pronounced against him by Omar Abdul-Raman, and nearly carried out in 1994, he has continued to chronicle and question Egyptian society. On this day in 1991, Salman Rushdie made his first appearance after three years in hiding from the fatwa against him; this would not have been needed, said Abdul-Raman, had Mahfouz been targeted earlier. top of page SELECTED WORKS BY THIS AUTHOR Akhenaten: Dweller in Truth

The novel Awlad Haratina (1959; tr. Children of Gebelawi, Children of the Alley, 1995), a semibiblical allegory, includes characters identified with Muhammad and Jesus. Considered blasphemous by some, it remains controversial in the Arabic-speaking world and was banned in Egypt. In the 1960s Mahfouz abandoned some of his realistic techniques and began to write shorter, faster-paced novels with stream of consciousness narratives and scriptlike dialogue, e.g., The Search (1964, tr. 1991). His other novels include

Naguib Mahfouz : A Biography The Arabic novel, however, was to wait for another generation for the advent of the man who was to make it his sole mission. Naguib, who was born to a middle-class family in one of the oldest quarters in Cairo, was to give expression in powerful metaphors, over a period of half a century, to the hopes and frustrations of his nation. Readers have so often identified themselves with his work, a great deal of which has been adapted for the cinema, theater and television, that many of his characters become household names in Egypt and elsewhere in the Arab world. On the other hand, his work, though deeply steeped in local reality, appeals to that which is universal and permanent in human nature, as shown by the relatively good reception his fiction has met in other cultures. In English and other languages, since the appearance in 1966 of his first translated novel Midag Alley, he has been widely read. Views of life How he Pictures the World In awarding the 1988 Nobel Prize for Literature to Naguib Mahfouz, the Swedish Academy of Letters noted that "through works rich in nuance - now clearsightedly realistic, now evocatively ambiguous - (Mahfouz) has formed an Arabic narrative art that applies to all mankind." Mahfouz is the author of more than thirty novels. "He is not only a Hugo and a Dickens, but also a Galsworthy, a Mann, a Zola and a Jules Romains." - Edward Said, London Review of Books. Published works translated into English.

About the Author and His Work Born in 1911 to a low-ranking civil servant, Mahfouz grew up in Gamaliyya, a tradition-rich section of historical Cairo. At age 19, he enrolled in the Department of Philosophy at Cairo University (then King Fuad University), from which he graduated in 1934. Following his graduation, Mahfouz found employment as a clerk in the civil service, where he worked in various governmental departments until his retirement in 1971. Mahfouz's literary career began in the late '30s with the publication of his first collection of short stories, The Whisper of Madness (1938), and a historical trilogy that dramatizes events and characters from ancient Egyptian history. The second and far more crucial phase of Mahfouz's literary career begins with the publication of his novel New Cairo in 1945. As its title suggests, the focus in this novel shifts to contemporary life in modern Egypt. Between 1945 and 1957, Mahfouz published seven more novels, all of which were written in the style of social realism. The crowning achievement of this phase-and perhaps of his career-are the three novels which make up
