(b. April 6, 1911, Munich, Ger.d. Aug. 8, 1979, Munich), German biochemist who, for his research on the metabolism of cholesterol and fatty acids, was a corecipient (with Konrad Bloch ) of the 1964 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine Lynen was trained at the University of Munich. After several years as a lecturer in the chemistry department there (1942-47), he became a professor. While at Munich he worked on the intermediary metabolism of the living cell. This research led to his demonstration in the early 1950s that the acetylation of coenzyme A is the key first step in a chain of reactions that result in the formation of cholesterol and fatty acids. In 1954 Lynen became director of the Max Planck Institute for Cell Chemistry in Munich. Lynen was highly regarded in the scientific community. His work on the biosynthesis of cholesterol and fatty acids was cited by the Nobel Prize committee as a contribution to pure chemistry and to the search for a remedy for heart disease caused by cholesterol.

Lynen, Feodor (Felix Konrad)
German biochemist who investigated the synthesis of cholesterol in the human body and the metabolism of fatty acids. For this work he shared the 1964 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with Konrad Bloch
Lynen was born and educated in Munich, where he spent his whole career, becoming professor 1953 and director of the Max Planck Institute for Cell Chemistry (later Biochemistry) 1954.
Lynen in Munich and Bloch in the USA corresponded and worked out the 36 steps involved in the synthesis of cholesterol. Bloch found that the basic unit is the simple acetate (ethanoate) ion, a chemical fragment containing only two carbon atoms. In 1951, Lynen found the carrier of this fragment. Bloch then found an intermediate compound, squalene - a long hydrocarbon containing 30 carbon atoms. The final stage was the transformation of the carbon chain of squalene into the four-ring molecule of cholesterol.
Lynen also worked on the biosynthesis of fatty acids, isolating from yeast an enzyme complex that acts as a catalyst in the synthesis of long-chain fatty acids from acetyl coenzyme A and malonyl coenzyme A. He also elucidated a series of energy-generating reactions that occur when fatty acids from food are respired to form carbon dioxide and water.

Research Fellowships for German Post-docs
The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH) offers within the framework of the Feodor Lynen Programme highly qualified German scholars from all disciplines an opportunity to carry out long-term research projects (1 to 4 years) at institutes outside Germany, provided they hold a doctorate and are younger than 38 years. The host must be a foreign scholar formerly sponsored by the Foundation (research fellow or research award winner). We also draw attention to the research fellowships for a research stay of 12 to 24 month in Japan granted by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). The host does not have to be a former Humboldt guest researcher. Please observe that the application requirements for these programmes differ in some parts from those for the Feodor Lynen Programme. Note: Foreign research stays for young German scholars and scientists funded by the programs of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation are exempt from the so-called "12 year rule" established within the Framework Act for Higher Education.
