If you want a book on this list that isn't available from the SWU library, let me know, please. Also, I confess (surprise!) that I have not read each and every one of these books. If there is a book that doesn't belong in the category I have indicated, let me know, please. Thanks! 26. Lwoff's Pathways - Viral Replication
in the early 1920s, but was not really understood until the 1950s, when itwas explored at the cellular level by andre lwoff, a French scientist.
http://www.accessexcellence.org/RC/AB/BC/Viral_Replication.html
Lwoff's Pathways - Viral Replication
Chris Evers Virus is from the Latin word for "poison." The term remains an apt one since viruses constitute one of the greatest threats to human health. One group of viruses, Herpes simplex (HSV), is the most commonly transmitted pathogen in industrialized countries. One type of HSV causes genital herpes - an incurable, sexually transmitted disease suffered by 30 million people in the United States. HSV illustrates an interesting property of certain viruses - it can take both active and latent forms. During the active phase, the virus interferes with the cell's normal metabolism, causing the symptoms associated with the disease - including painful genital blisters. During the latent phase, it's as if the virus has gone to sleep. Although the host cells remain infected, the host is a symptom-free carrier of the disease. We now know the difference between the active and latent manifestations of viral infection is a result of a switch in viral replication patterns. Some viruses can only replicate by what is called the lytic pathway. They enter and inject a host cell with DNA, forcing it to make new viruses. At some point bursting at the seams with the viruses, the host breaks open, releasing new pathogens into the environment. Other viruses operate differently: they enter and inject their DNA into the host cell - but instead of taking over the host cell and using it to make viruses, the injected DNA can become inactive for some time, until the appropriate cellular event triggers its awakening. This latter pathway is called the temperate or lysogenic pathway.

James Watson: Guilty of Being Honest
written by: Mary Lynn Dorten
James D. Watson, famous for his discovery with Francis Crick, can himself be quite the double helix- a sharp scientific mind intertwined with a child-like innocence. He has often been criticized for his honesty in his book, The Double Helix: A Personal Account of the Discovery of the Structure of DNA Watson opens his personal account with, “I have never seen Francis Crick in a modest mood. Perhaps in other company he is that way, but I never had reason so to judge him.” (9). He goes onto say that “he talked louder and faster than anyone else and, when he laughed, his location within the Cavendish was obvious (10).” From the beginning he creates the feeling of distance and separation from the emotion of the story. He simply states observations of Crick. They are strong statements, but through the style possess innocence and a bit of humor. In his review of the book, Andre Lwoff wrote: “Watson and Crick work in perfect harmony; they have cordial personal relations and Jim is often a guest at the Cricks’. Moreover, it is clear that Jim admires Francis’ brilliant mind. In view of all this, Crick’s portrait by Watson is somewhat astonishing. On reexamining the book one finds that Jim’s cold objectivity is applied to persons he likes, admires or respects as it is to crystals or base pairing. Very few are spared. May God protect us from such friends!” (230) Watson uses two distinctive voices to tell his story about the discovery of the structure of DNA. His two voices do not differ so much that they disrupt the pace of the book or create voids of relation within the text. They do just the opposite and intertwine to create Watson for the reader. He speaks candidly about his social and personal events in relation to the discovery in a descriptive and narrative form. Then within his personal accounts are more formal passages where Watson speaks as a professional scientist to an “intelligent lay audience.” It is through these two voices of Watson that his character is truly depicted. Through the two styles he illustrates his maturity in the field of science and immaturity in the social world.

L'institut André Lwoff Notre activité scientifique s'organise autour de l'étude des régulations de la prolifération et de la différenciation cellulaire chez les mammifères, en particulier dans le contexte de la progression tumorale. In the following links, I recommend that you use internet explorer or adobe reader to "Find" the word "Phage." This exercise makes for quick reading and fast learning. The Noble Lectures http://www.nobel.se/medicine/laureates/1958/lederberg-lecture.pdf This is an outstanding noble prize lecture by Joshua Lederberg, and the speech illuminates the early history of phage research and what this research did for our understanding of genetics. Central phage biology concepts are included here, such as transduction lysis temperate phage prophage and lytic cycle http://www.nobel.se/medicine/laureates/1958/tatum-lecture.html The above is a noble prize lecture speech by Edward Tatum, (the prize was shared with Lederberg and Wells Beadle). It only concerns phage slightly, but is an interesting read that gives credit to who was working with bacteriophage early on. http://www.nobel.se/medicine/laureates/1965/lwoff-lecture.html This noble lecture indicates the significance of Hershey's experimentation with phage, the concept of genetic material and viruses, in addition to explaining the phage lifecycle with dramatic flair. http://www.nobel.se/medicine/laureates/1968/nirenberg-lecture.pdf
