Luria's work with Max Delbruck on bacteriophage demonstrated that bacterial resistance to certain phages arose through genetic mutations. His later work showed that phages also mutate genetically. He received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1969 with Max Delbruck and Alfred D. Hershey. The collection is organized into seven series: I. Correspondence, 1938-1992 ; IIa. Subject Files, 1938-1990 ; IIb. Personal Material. 1923-1991 ; III. Works by Luria, 1938-1987 ; IV. Works by Others, 1944-1990 ; V. Research Notes and Notebooks, 1941-1979 ; VI. Salvador Edward Luria
(1912-1991), biologist
He studied at the university of his native Turin, Italy, and then in Paris. After the Germans took over France in 1940 he went to the USA and taught at Columbia University (1940-42), Indiana University (1943-50), the University of Illinois (1950-59), and was professor of microbiology (from 1964 of biology) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) from 1959. His researches during WW2 proved that genetic mutations could occur in viruses that infect bacteria, a discovery that won him the 1969 Nobel Prize in medicine. From 1972 to 1985, he directed the Center for Cancer Research at MIT.

Luria was trained in medicine and interested in physics. After receiving his medical degree from the University of Turin, he worked at the Radium Institute in Paris, studying medical physics, including radiation biology. There he also learned about bacteriophage. When Italy entered WWII Luria came to the U.S., working first at Columbia and then accepting a post at Indiana University. He first met Max Delbruck in 1940, when Delbruck was at Vanderbilt and Luria was at the New York College of Physicians and Surgeons. Delbruck invited him to go join him at Cold Spring Harbor the following summer to do phage experiments. Luria accepted and thus the "phage group" was born. These scientists, located around the country, met at Cold Spring Harbor during the 1940s to do experiments and talk science. Their research goal was to identify the physical nature of the gene. To do this, they used bacterial viruses, called bacteriophage or simply "phage." These were the simplest "creatures" they could find that had genesthe biological equivalent of a hydrogen atom. In the 1940s Luria's Indiana University lab contained graduate student James D. Watson

Turin, Italy, August 13, 1912, d. Lexington, Massachusetts, February 7, 1991] A pioneer in the field of molecular biology, Luria conducted a variety of experiments using bacteriophages (viruses that infect bacteria). He believed that bacterial resistance to bacteriophages results from mutations rather than adaptations on the part of individual bacteria (the leading theory in the early 1940s). With Max Delbr¼ck, Luria developed the fluctuation test to confirm his theory. The test became a standard tool for determining mutation rates in bacteria and viruses. SALVADOR E. LURIA, NOBEL LAUREATE
WHO FOUNDED MIT CANCER CENTER
Author: Date: Thursday, February 7, 1991
Page: Section: OBITUARY Salvador E. Luria, a molecular biologist who shared the 1969 Nobel Prize in medicine for research into viruses and founded the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Cancer Research Center, died of a heart attack yesterday at his home in Lexington. He was 78. The exploration of virus reproduction, which was begun in the 1940s by Dr. Luria, Max Delbruck of the California Institute of Technology and Alfred D. Hersey of the Carnegie Institute of Washington, paved the way for development of recombinant DNA technology and genetic engineering. Drs. Luria and Delbruck also received the Louisa Gross Horowitz Prize in 1969 for their contributions to the genetics of bacteria and bacteriophage. An outspoken opponent of the Vietnam War and supporter of Sen. Eugene J. McCarthy's 1968 presidential campaign, Dr. Luria had little patience with scientists who "exile themselves from the arena of social struggles," as he put it.

A MAN OF SCIENCE; A MAN OF POLITICS
MIT'S SALVADOR LURIA, ACTIVIST AND NOBEL LAURIATE, KEEPS HIS TWO ROLES SEPARATE
Author: By Andrew Bagnato Contributing Reporter Date: Saturday, August 25, 1984 Page: Section: RUN OF PAPER Dr. Salvador E. Luria is a scientist who believes his political activism may be more important than his Nobel Prize-winning work in medicine. He is a man who has made headlines with both his career and his belief in socialism, but he said he can draw the line between the two. "My politics does not influence my scientific work," said Luria on a recent afternoon at his vacation home here, where he is recovering from his second back operation in a year. "I'm a split person." The energetic 72-year-old director of the Center for Cancer Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology recently published his autobiography, "A Slot Machine, A Broken Test Tube." It describes the professional Luria but also tells about a man who has avoided the spotlight and who believes in the old-fashioned ideas of a strong family and hard work. He said he internalized those concepts during the 15 years he spent teaching in Indiana and Illinois. "It's really been the Middle West that created me," he said, stroking his dog, Pablo. "I feel so Americanized. I don't feel strongly Jewish or Italian anymore."
