Lewis, Edward B
Lewis, Edward B: (1918-2004) American geneticist and Nobel Laureate who showed how genes control embryonic development. In 1957 Lewis discovered that genes were arranged on chromosomes in the same order as they were activated along the body axis during development, a concept known as the colinearity principle. Lewis identified genes as switches that are turned on or off during development. As another scientist put it, "What Ed was able to do, in the absence of molecular understanding, was to come up with a basic concept of how genes work . . . in terms of a logical relationship, like a diagram of an electronic circuit." Aside from pioneering work on embryonic development, Lewis did key work on the effects of radiation in an era when many thought that there was a threshold below which radiation could not cause cancer. Lewis analyzed data on Japanese A-bomb survivors and wrote in 1957 that "these data provide no evidence for a threshold dose for the induction of leukemia." Lewis also compared the leukemia incidence among radiologists to that among other physicians, finding that "chronic irradiation at a relatively low dose rate...appears to induce leukemia in radiologists at a rate...comparable to that observed for the Japanese survivors." Lewis was publically attacked by the Atomic Energy Commission and other scientists at the time but now it is clear he was entirely correct.

Each of the genes contain a homeobox, a remarkably conserved DNA sequence that provides molecular support for the hypothesis that the complex itself arose by a process of tandem gene duplication.
Edward B. Lewis

It is likely that mutations within the HOM-C's of human beings are the cause of certain genetically based abnormalities that arise at various stages.
Edward B. Lewis

The high degree of conservation of the HOM-C, itself, between vertebrates and invertebrates indicates that it arose from an ancestral complex over 500 million years ago, the estimated time of separation of these two great groups of organisms.

Children: Kevin George Lewis Herbert Lewis and Cecelia were married at the Estina Catholic Church in Leshara, Nebraska, on February 15, 1916. They lived with John and Martha Winker (brother of Lew, sister of Celia) in De Smet, South Dakota, for several months after they were married. That summer they moved to central Minnesota, to a 100 acre plot about a mile west of Randall. The land was purchased from another relative; it is thought that it had been abandoned, or tax-forfeit land, and was obtained for the amount of taxes owed. They built a house and began farming. Lewis accepted a position as a rural mail carrier in Bowlus, Minnesota, in 1919 and the young couple moved there (they are listed on the 1920 Federal Census * as living in Bowlus). In 1920 the mail carrier job in Randall opened up and they moved back to Randall. Initially Lewis carried mail on both the Bowlus and Randall routes, but eventually kept just the Randall route. They also did some farming, but the farm was primarily to feed the family.

Former Winners, 1991
Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research Edward B. Lewis Obituary The following is an excerpt of an obituary for Dr. Lewis published by the New York Times on July 26, 2004.
Dr. Edward B. Lewis, a geneticist whose landmark observations of fruit-fly genes shed light on embryonic development in humans and was recognized with a Nobel Prize in 1995, died July 21 at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, Calif. He was 86 and lived in San Marino, Calif. The cause was prostate cancer, said Dr. Welcome Bender, a former student of Dr. Lewis's at the California Institute of Technology, where he had been a member of the faculty since 1946. For a generation of scientists and students, the symbol of Dr. Lewis's research was a dramatic four-winged mutant of the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, which typically has only two wings. In cross-breeding the flies and provoking genetic changes with chemicals and radiation, he isolated the four-winged mutations and began to identify a cluster of genes that regulate development of the insect's body segments.

Edward B. Lewis, 1918-2004
Posted by PZ Myers on July 29, 2004 01:55 PM It hasn't been a good week for biology. I've just learned that Francis Crick has died , and while I was at SDB I heard news that grieved me even more: Ed Lewis has died Lewis was one of the giants of Drosophila genetics. He was a student of Thomas Hunt Morgan , and one of the rare practitioners of pure genetics at the time molecular biology was swallowing up the field. He's mentioned several times in Jonathan Weiner's book, Time, Love, Memory
