Rita Levi-Montalcini, Nobel Laureate, 1986. During this time, Levi-Montalcini's home in Turin became a meeting place for the friends and former students of G. Levi, as well as a laboratory. By 1942, however, the intense bombing of Turin forced Levi-Montalcini to move to the countryside. Here conditions for research were even more primitive, and her experimental eggs were often consumed after they had yielded up their results. In spite of these deprivations, she completed a study of the acoustical-vestibular centers of the chick, a study that was published in the United States some years later (Levi-Montalcini, 1949). When the Nazis invaded Italy after Mussolini's fall in 1943, Levi-Montalcini and her family fled again to Florence, where they became refugees, surviving by anonymity. Finally, with the end of the war in 1945, she returned to Turin and became the assistant of Levi, who resumed his position as professor of anatomy at the University. In 1946 she received a letter from Hamburger, who had read her articles with Levi on the relation between the periphery and the developing nerve centers; because they disagreed on the interpretation of similar results (Hamburger, 1934), Hamburger invited her to work for a 1-year period in his laboratory in St. Louis. Thus, in 1947 Levi-Montalcini finally left Turin to spend "the next 26 years, the happiest and most productive of my life" at Washington University (Levi-Montalcini, 1975). In 1974 she returned to Rome, where she has carried out numerous additional studies on NGF at the Instituto di Biologia Cellulare.

Rita Levi-Montalcini, ca. 1963 Neurophysiologist Rita Levi-Montalcini shared the 1986 Nobel Prize for physiology or medicine with biochemist Stanley Cohen for their discovery of nerve growth factor (NGF), a protein that causes developing cells to grow by stimulating surrounding nerve tissue. Their research, conducted in the 1950s, while members of the faculty of Washington University, is of fundamental importance to the understanding of cell and organ growth and plays a significant role in understanding cancers and diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Because she was a dual citizen of Italy and the United States, Levi-Montalcini did her most important work at Washington Univ. with Stanley Cohen. Studying mouse tumors implanted in chicken embryos, the pair isolated a nerve-growth factor, the first of many cell-growth factors found in animals. She made ground breaking discoveries in the early 1950's of the Nerve Growth Factor. That helps understanding of such disorders as cancer, birth defects, and Alzheimer's. "The remarkable thing about that is when we did see cell death, we observed that it is in the same regions of the brain as one would see in HD. We never expected this. Remember, we have this short fragment of the protein, not the whole protein, being expressed in mice. So in terms of what this polyglutamine load is doing in brains, we can say that it doesn't easily kill cells, because we don't see any cell death until the very, very end stage. And it's very selective. It's making cells dysfunction, and that's what's causing the symptoms. This may well be what's happening in patients."

"HOW COULD YOU GO BACK TO A COUNTRY THAT persecuted you, that took away your citizenship, your profession, where you had to live underground to survive?" She was watering her plants, dozens of coral and crimson plants, in the living-room of the apartment she shares with her sister Paola. She put the watering-can on a table beside the black corduroy couch on which I was sitting. But she didn't answer. She only smiled a little as she went to the book-shelves in the hall, and returned with an armful of books that she placed next to the watering-can. It took me a long time to find the answer to my question, a time I spent reading quantities of books and papers, interviewing her colleagues, friends and relatives, going back and forth between the United States and Italy. The answer has to do with the singular nature of Italian culture and Jewish assimilation to this culture, as well as to the variable relationships between women and men in both Italy and the United States.
